Text | The relatives and friends of Mrs. Elizabeth J. Hadley were shocked to
hear of her sudden death on Monday morning, Nov. 15, at their home just
west of Exeter. Mrs. Hadley had been in good health for a person
of her advanced age, not having been under a physician's care for three
years until two weeks ago, when she contracted a severe cold and narrowly
escaped pneumonia. Having recovered from this attack she seemed to
be in her usual health. About 4 o'clock Monday morning she was taken
suddenly ill and lived less than one hour. The cause is supposed
to have been heart failure.
Elizabeth Jane Hadley was born in Tennessee February 11, 1837. When but a child she came with her parents to Barry County which has since been her home. She was twice married. Her second husband was Evrard Hadley, a well known citizen of this county, who died in 1894. To them were born six children all of whom are living and were at the funeral. The children are: Mrs. Price Stapleton, Thomas Hadley and Miss Lottie of Exeter, C.H. Hadley of this city, Leonard of Ardmore Okla., and Charles of Denison, Tex. Mrs. Hadley had been a member of the Baptist church since childhood. She was a charter member of the Antioch Baptist church west of Cassville and at her death was a member of the Exeter Baptist church. She was a lady of noble christian character, a kind and affectionate mother and a neighbor and friend beloved by all who knew her. The funeral ceremonies were conducted by Rev. C.M. Smith at Exeter Tuesday afternoon where the remains were deposited in their last resting place. We extend our heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved children. Research Note: The Barry County Cemeteries Book has that Elizabeth was buried in Maplewood Cemetery. Her name is listed as Elizabeth H., not Jane; shows death date of Nov. 15, 1909 and age of 72 yrs. 10 mos. 4 days. Does not show year of birth. Shows spouse's first name as Everheart, not Evrard. Elizabeth Jane was the daughter of Lawrence Bradley and Sarah Green. Tombstone has Elizabeth J. Research Note by Dar Randall: Elizabeth Jane Hadley was married to my 5th great grandfather. Evehart Hadley. He was married twice as well. Elizabeth Jane Hadley was married to a Mr. Dilworth. Mr. Dilworth was killed in Cassville by Union soldiers during the war. He is mentioned in Goodspeed's History. |
