Text | Barry county lost another one of its old time and highly honored citizens Wednesday afternoon at 4 o’clock, when Mrs. Burl Gowen, passed away at her home near Washburn. Mrs. Gowen was one of the early citizens of this county and has resided in the Washburn country ever since she came to this county, many years ago. She was the wife of Burl Gowen, who preceded her in death a few years ago, and who stood high in the estimation of all his acquaintances for his honest, straight-forward dealing at all times. Mrs. Gowen as about 75 years old and leaves two daughters and two sons to mourn her passing, who are. Mrs. Veril Mcglothin of Seligman, Miss Maggie at home and two sons, James and Willis, both of that community. She also leaves a brother, Henry who lives in Teas. Mrs. Gowen was also distantly related to Mrs. Charles Ray, publisher of the Democrat. She was a daughter of the late Jas. Durham, an honorable citizen of this county. Impressive funeral services were conducted Thursday afternoon by Rev. Chas. Vanzandt of Exeter, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Roller cemetery, near he home. # No woman was better loved and stood higher in her community, that this excellent woman. She was a splendid neighbor and very religious, and will be sadly missed by her many relatives and friends, The Democrat extends sympathy to the bereaved family in their sad hour. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Northcutt, Mrs. Charles Ray and sister, Mrs. W. E. Thomas of Kansas City, were among those from that city that attended the funeral service.
