Text | Addie Martha Lee Ghan, daughter of the late William and Texanna Rice and beloved wife of Joseph C. Ghan, was born in Union County, Georgia, Aug 29, 1882 and has resided in Barry County, MO, for the past 53 years. She passed away unexpectedly in sleep at her home near Wheaton, Mo., at 3 o’clock Friday morning, Jan 23, 1953 at the age of 70 years 5 months and 25 days. She had professed Christianity early in her youth at the Mount Zion Baptist Church and later transferred her membership to the Muncie Chapel Methodist Church, where she remained a devout member until her death. She was united in marriage to Joseph C. Ghan, Dec. 17, 1899 at Boaz, Mo. To this union were born 10 children: two sons, Otis R. Ghan of Stockton, Calif., and Kenneth W. Ghan, who proceeded his mother in death in 1935; 8 daughters, Pearl Courtney, Mrs. Edd Burkhardt and Mrs. Carl Wendt, all of Long Beach, Calif., Mrs. Ralph Bullock, Mrs. F. W. McCarthy and Mrs. E. A. Williams residents of Kansas City, Mo., Mrs. Leo Holmes and Mrs. Marce L. McCullah residing in Wheaton, Mo. Her sister, Mrs. Bertha Ghan, and a brother, Jessie Rice, departed life previously. Surviving are her three sisters, Mrs. Tom Ghan of Wheaton, Mrs. Maud Trait, Lynwood, Calif., and Mrs. Matt Kauland of Kansas City, Mo., and two brothers. Addie, as everyone called her leaves to mourn her unexpected parting her husband, 9 children 9 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild, a large number of nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives, friends and acquaintances. Funeral services were conducted at Muncie Chapel at 2 o’clock Monday afternoon, Jan 26 by Rev. Carlton Knight, former pastor, assisted by Rev. Frank Catame. Burial was made in the Muncie Cemetery under direction of Pogue funeral home.
