Obit For Sarah Belle (Dixon) Gardner
Headline -
Text Sarah Belle Gardner was born May 27, 1860 near Uptonville, KY. She was the youngest daughter of Cornelius and Jane Dixon. She married to Logan W. Gardner November 9, 1876 in Kentucky and five years later they, with their two children and the parents of L W Gardner, came from Kentucky to Missouri in two covered wagons, making the trip in about 21 days. They settled in Barry County Missouri on a farm near Shoal Creek about two miles east of where the town of Wheaton is now located, where they lived about four years. They then bought and moved to a farm on the edge of Oliver’s Prairie near what is now the town of Wheaton. There they made a home and reared a family of five children.

Her husband, L. W. Gardner served as judge of the county court of Barry County. He died at the old homestead 33 years ago but his widow continued to live there until about five years ago. Since that time she has been living with her children, and at the time of her death was living with her youngest daughter, Anna Santee in Wheaton. She is survived by all five children, J. M. Gardner of Wheaton, Attorney H. A. Gardner of Monett, Alice Farley of Pierce City, Emma Morgan and Annah Santee of Wheaton, eleven grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren.

She was one of the oldest charter members of the Wheaton Baptist Church and was a regular attendant at church until her affliction became such that she could no longer attend. She would have been 87 years of age May 27, 1947.

The Gardners were typical of the sturdy Kentucky stock which migrated to Missouri and became pioneers in the settlement of south west Missouri. Mrs. Gardner was a good Christian woman and was of a positive character and stood by her convictions. Her chief interest was with her home and family. She loved her family and was very much devoted to them and, typical of the Kentucky stock, her greatest ambition was to keep her family together. She was industrious and, so long as was able, was interested in community activities.

Funeral services were conducted at the Wheaton Baptist Church Tuesday afternoon by Rev. P W Bryan. Burial was made in the Muncey cemetery under the direction of the Pogue Funeral Home.
