He spent all of his early life in Barry County. At the age of 22 years he joined the Mt. Joy Presbyterian Church where he was a member for many years.

He was united in marriage to Sarah L. Combs on Oct. 18, 1878. To this union three children were born, two daughters and one son, the latter dying in infancy. Since moving to Springfield Mr. Fly had been a member of the First Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

Mr. Fly traded his farm, south of Purdy, fifteen years ago for his home in Springfield and retired. He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, Mrs. Sarah L. Fly, two daughters, Mrs. J. A. Burrows and Mrs. H.R. Blankenship, both of Springfield; one brother, Sam M. Fly of Sawyer, Kan.; three sisters, Mrs. J. W. Combs of Sawyer, Kan.; and Mrs. W. S. Francis and Miss Lou Fly, both of Pioneer; five grandchildren, W. O., Arthur, Jr., Charles and Hollis Burrows and Hillard Blankenship; three great grandchildren, Barbara Ann, Jerry Elaine and Larry Hollis, and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at the home 11 o’clock Wednesday, followed by a second service at 2 o’clock in the afternoon by Rev. Alman at the Mt. Pleasant Church, near Butterfield. Burial was made in the Mt Pleasant Cemetery. The funeral was in charge of J. W. Klinger of Springfield. Pallbearers were the grandsons.

Research Note: The math for his marriage and age doesn't work with the date that is given for his birthday. If he was 80 years old then he should have been born about 1841.
