Text | Elzy Glenn Fletcher, 91, of Purdy, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 12, 2014, in his home. He was born in Barry County on Dec. 28, 1922, son of Percy and Ella (VanZandt) Fletcher.
In January 1941, he began working with the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in Missouri. On Sept. 4, 1944, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he served on the USS Geneva until 1946. On Nov. 7, 1947, he was united in marriage to Willadene Ethridge, in Bentonville, Ark. They made their home in the Seligman, Washburn area for a number of years before moving to Tulsa, Okla., where he worked as a tool-grinder for Douglas Aircraft. In 1958, they returned to Barry County where he worked as a farmer, raising chickens, managing a broiler house, and cattle. He attended the Church of Christ. For the last 15 years, he lived in Purdy. Survivors include: his wife of 66 years, Willadene, of Purdy; one son, Larry and his wife, Connie, of Granby; one grandson; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one infant daughter, Linda Sue Fletcher; two brothers; and two sisters. Full military graveside services were held Tuesday at the Dent Cemetery in McDonald County, with Bob Mizer officiating. |
