| Text | Mrs. Berthena Fields died August 2, of dropsy at the home of her daughter, Mrs. I. N. Meador, near Exeter. Her body was buried Thursday at the Truelove Cemetery near Washburn. Mrs. Fields was 74 years of age and was an old citizen of this county, having lived here almost continuously since about 1857 when her parents moved to Barry County from Johnson County. Her first husband, Newton Lee, was killed during the Civil War. After this time she underwent all the hardships incident to war times, trying single handed to care for her children. She was married about ten years ago to John Fields of Washburn. He died two years ago. Since that time she has made her home with her daughter. Mrs. Fields was a sister of Frank Thompson of this city, Henry Thompson of Exeter, W. R. Thompson of Washburn and Joe Thompson son of Newton County. |
