Obit For Wanda Loraine (Long) Erwin

Text Wanda Loraine (Long) Erwin departed this life June 16, 2003, to be received into the arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and be reunited with friends and family who have gone on before, most especially her loving husband Leon.

Loraine was born November 7, 1924 in Barry County, Missouri on the Long family home across the road from what is known as “Bear Cave”. Loraine was the youngest of five children born to James (Jim) Edward Long and Lucy Elizabeth (Metcalf) Long. She had two sisters, Effie and Grace and two brothers Cecil and Arnold. Soon after her birth the family moved from Star Hollow to just south of Exeter where she grew up and attended school in Exeter. On October 15, 1939, she committed her life to Jesus Christ and was baptized March 17, 1940. For the next 63 years she lived a life of dedication and service.

She was united in marriage on November 15, 1942 to Leon Edward Erwin. Leon and Loraine had two children: Gloria Shanks and her husband Charles of Joplin, Mo. and Glenn Erwin and his wife Barbara of Washburn, Mo., four grandchildren: Bryan Shank and his wife Wendy of Paris, Tenn. Jeannette Shank of Joplin, Mo., Jim Erwin and wife Heike of Bremen, Germany. Jolynn Nelson and husband Richard of Jacksonville, Fla. And four great grandchildren, Aaron Shank, Mykayla Shank, Ashlee Nelson and Brooke Nelson. Loraine and Leon owned and operated the family farm two miles north of Washburn where they raised cattle and were one of the first poultry operations in the Washburn area.

Loraine worked outside the farm on several occasions namely Weaver’s Flowers and Groceries, The MFA of Washburn, Johnson’s Variety and Riddle’ Shoes. Loraine served alongside Leon in ministry for God. They faithfully served the congregations of Calvary Baptist in Exeter, Missouri., Mt. Olivet in Pierce City, Missouri, Rock Springs in Seligman, and First Baptist of Washburn. She was precede in death by her parents Jim and Lucy Long, Both sisters, Effie Kelly of Lincoln, Ill. Grace Harris, Joplin, Mo., and one brother Cecil Long of Neosho and her husband of 52 years. Reverend Leon Erwin.

Visitation will be at Fohn Funeral Home Thursday, June 19 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.. Funeral services will be at Washburn First Baptist Church Friday, June 20, 2003 at 3:00 p.m. Services will be conducted by her brother Rev. Arnold Long, her nephew Rev. Mark Senter and grandson Rev. Jim Erwin. Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery in Exeter.
