Text Dr. Garland L. Dummit of Compton, California, prominent in the Southern California field of dentistry, passed away January 20 in the Marinda Nursing Home in Lynwood, California.

He was born in Neosho, but at the age of four, came with his parents to Monett. He was the son of Mary L. and F. R. Dummit, who with their family were well known in the Monett area.

Garland finished the Monett schools, then entered the Western Dental College in Kansas City. Upon graduating in 1915 he established practice in Pittsburg Kansas. On 1916 he was married to Florence Crawford of that city. They resided there until 1923 when they moved to Compton, California, where he continued his practice.

Not only was he well known in his own field, he was an outstanding leader in the community and church affairs. Philanthropic enterprises were of especial interest to him and he gave of himself to various ones, among which he was one of the founders of the PTA Free Dental Clinic of Compton, served on the board of the Salvation Army, had been a leader in the Boy Scouts, was a member of the Masonic Lodge and was a charter member of the Compton Rotary Club. He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church and had been an elder for the last twelve years.

Funeral services were held in Neel's Funeral Parlors and were largely attended by the community which mourns his passing. Interment was in Angelus Abby, Compton. He is survived by his wife, Florence Dummit, his brother, Eldon of Lexington, Kentucky, and three sisters, Lela Rohrbaugh of National City, California; Elsie Bottom of Washington D. C.; Jessie Whitt of Sarasota, Florida, and several nieces and nephews.
