Text | Mary Ellen Cook Duis passed into the presence of our Lord on December 25, 2015, in Houston, Texas. She is 12 generations removed from William Bradford who traveled to America on the Mayflower and landed on Plymouth Rock in 1620. She was born in Barry County, Missouri on June 23, 1936. She lived on a farm and learned to milk cows by hand and put up hay for the cows. She graduated from Southwest High School in Washburn, Barry County, Missouri, in 1954. She went to Springfield and worked at St. John’s Hospital as a secretary.
In 1959 she met and married John C. Hays of Pierce City, Missouri, a World War II veteran, before moving to Kansas City, where she worked and raised two boys, Mark and Alan. In 1968 John died suddenly of a heart attack. A year later she met and married D. A. Dickey, who was a machinist by trade. They moved to Pleasanton, Kansas and bought an 80 acre farm, living there as their children grew up and graduated college. In 1993 D.A. died suddenly of a stroke. A few years later she met and married the man of her dreams, a widower, Loren Duis. Loren is the sweetest and most accommodating husband of all, her knight in shining armour. They were married on Jan 17, 1998. For a time Mary Ellen worked at the medical clinic in Reynolds, but finally retired. She was a faithful disciple of Christ throughout her long, full life and was a woman appreciated by many. She is survived by her husband Loren, son Alan Dickey and his wife Shirley, three grandchildren, Ethan, Faith and Grace, of Houston, Texas, and her brother Donald Cook, of Merriam, Kansas. Her parents, Helen and Bryan Cook, preceded her in death, as did brother Albert J. Cook and son Mark. |
