Text | Amelia Mary "Mamie" Dody, 75, Stark City, Mo., died at 9:58 a.m. Monday, April 16, 2007, at St. John's Hospital, Joplin, following a lengthy illness. She was born June 28, 1931, in Monett, Mo., to Joe and Veronica Burdolski.
Mrs. Dody attended Southwest Missouri Teachers College (now SMSU) in 1946 and received a B.S. in education from Drury College in 1968. Taking evening and summer classes, she also attended Monett Junior College, Kansas City, Kan., Junior College, Rockhurst College, Lincoln University (1976), Liberty College and the University of Missouri (correspondence) workshops-50 hours yearly. She taught in elementary schools for 60 years including McDonald County R-1, 1966 to present, fourth, fifth and sixth grades; Granby, fifth grade; Fairview, fifth grade (1957); North K.C. (Davidson School, Englewood and Meadowbrook), fifth grade; Quaker School in Barry County, rural 1 through 8; Wheaton School, fifth grade (1950); and Henneman in Barry County, rural 1 through 8 (1946 to 1950). Among other achievements she was bldgs. rep. for I.R.A. Local (Council); I.R.A. (State); bldg. rep. for years for M.S.T.A. MCCTA; president for Barry County Teacher's Association; Young Author's Coordinator; served on the Curriculum Committee; was a mentor for teachers for several years; student teacher; presented several workshops; and updated course objectives. She received the McDonald County Teacher of the Year, 1996 to 1997; McDonald County Teacher of the Month, 1997; Who's Who Among America's Teachers, 1996; 50th year plaque from Senate (Marvin Singleton); 50th year plaque from Rep. (Sam Gaskill); 50th year plaque from MSTA; Golden Apple Award, 2002; and MSTA Lifetime Educator Award, 2003. She was a member of St. Canera Catholic Church. Amelia and William Lee Dody were married June 15, 1957, in Monett. He preceded her in death March 10, 1975. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Gary Waters, Stella; two brothers, Eddie Burdolski, Fairview, and Joe Burdolski, Gardner, Kan.; two grandsons, Colt and Ryan Waters; and a great-grandson, Trenton Waters. She was preceded in death by four sisters and three brothers. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Canera Catholic Church, Neosho. Burial will follow in Pulaskifield Cemetery, Pulaskifield, Mo.
