Headline | CASSVILLE MERCHANT DIES IN KENTUCKY WHILE ON VACATION |
Text | Gale L. Cope, 62, Cassville businessman, died at 9:30 o'clock Monday morning at Lexington, Kentucky, while on vacation. Mr. Cope suffered a heart attack on July 31 while enroute to visit a grandson stationed at Oceana, Va., and had been hospitalized since that time in Lexington.
Born Dec. 14, 1900 in Barry County, Mr. Cope had lived his entire life in the county. He taught in rural schools for 11 years. On January 1, 1929, he opened a general merchandise store in Shell Knob, later moving to Cassville where he operated a general merchandise store until January of 1963. Until the time of his death, he owned and operated the Vacationland Laundromat here. He was a member and elder in the Mill Street Church of Christ, a member of Cassville Rotary Club and the Chamber of Commerce. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Opal Melton Cope to whom he was married March 27, 1921, a son Robert D. Cope of the home; three daughters, Mrs. Quentin Epperly and Mrs. Raymond Timmons, both of Cassville, and Mrs. Jerry Miller of Richmond, Mo.; five brothers, Glenn Cope of Jenkins, Dr. William Cope of Long Beach, Calif., Chester Cope of Kansas City, Kan., Bud Cope of Springfield, and George Cope of Tehachapi, Calif.; three sisters, Mrs. Jess Hancock of Moro, Ill., Mrs. Hugh Parks and Mrs. Milford Eaton of Springfield, and six grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, August 15, at the Mill Street Church of Christ in Cassville with Bro. Don Deffenbaugh officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery under direction of Williamson Chapel in the Valley of Cassville. |
