Obit For William Fred Cooper

Text William Fred Cooper, age 90, of Shell Knob, passed away Saturday, March 21, 2009, in Missouri Veterans Home, Mt. Vernon. He was born March 14, 1919, in Shell Knob, and was a son of Charley and Susie (Call) Cooper.

On March 23, 1942, in California, he was united in marriage to Lillian Cothran who preceded him in death in 1986. He was also preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Leotha Cooper, Leora Cooper and Gladys Cooper; and two brothers, Warren Cooper and Velmer Cooper. Survivors include: one sister, of Shell Knob; and one sister-in-law, of Kansas City.

He received his education in Shell Knob and Cassville, graduating from Cassville High School in 1940. In 1941, he moved to California, where he worked for McDonald Douglas Aircraft in Santa Monica, from which he retired. During World War II he was in the United States Army, serving from Aug. 28, 1944, until July 4, 1946. He was a light machine gunner with the 26th Infantry Regiment and received a Purple Heart and Bronze Star. In 1993, he moved to Missouri to live with his sister and brother-in-law Opal and Phillip Wilson.

As his health was deteriorating he spent a year in Red Rose Inn in Cassville, while waiting to enter the Missouri Veterans Home.

Graveside services with military honors were held today (Wednesday) in Painter Cemetery, Shell Knob, under direction of Fohn Funeral Home, Shell Knob. Pastor Carroll Williamson conducted the services.
