Obit For John S. Cooper

Text John S. Cooper of near Shell Knob, who for the past 40 years had been a citizen of Barry County, died in Cassville where he had been brought a few days ago for better medical attention, Sunday, July 14, of a kidney and bladder trouble.

His body was prepared for burial by undertaker Horine and was taken to the Cooper home south of Shell Knob Sunday afternoon. The funeral services conducted by Rev. Will Ireland, were held Monday afternoon and internment made at the Painter Cemetery.

John Cooper was born in White County, Tennessee, March 8, 1848. The Cooper family came to Wright County, this state, when John S. was a boy. Later the family lived in Howell, Oregon and Jasper counties. He was married and Howell County. Mrs. Cooper and eight children are living. A son, Fred, died last December at Camp Funston while in the military service.

The children are: Mrs. Martha Painter, wife of Thos. Painter, Mrs. Paralee Mathews Mary Mills, wife of Noah Mills and Will, Arthur, Eli, Pleas and Charley. All of the children were present when their father passed away. All but Pleas live near Shell Knob. Pleas lives near Chelsea, Okla.

He also leaves two brothers, Ben Cooper of Shell Knob and Wash Cooper northwest of Cassville and one sister, Mrs. Bettie Powell of Carrollton, Ark. All attended the funeral.

Mr. Cooper came to Barry County about the year 1878 and located in the Horner locality southeast of Cassville. He lived for several years on what is now the I. W. Brock farm. For the past thirty years or more he had lived near Shell Knob. He was a conscientious, industrious, upright man. He has a large number of friends over the county who will be grieved to learn of his death.
