Text | Edward Clanton died at his home four miles southeast of Cassville Tuesday night, Sept. 26, following a lingering illness of several weeks, from old age and general debility. He was 84 years old and had been active up to a short time ago. Edward Clanton was born in Arkansas April 25, 1832. He had lived in Missouri and in this county for many years. He had been four times married and leaves nine children, three sons and six girls by two of the marriages. The children are: Mrs. Rebecca Clark of Shell Knob, Mrs. Mary Henson of Verona, Mrs. Mattie Henson of Monett, J.A. Clanton of Shell Knob and Mrs. Margaret Henbest of Chelsea, Okla.; of one marriage and Grant Clanton of Chelsea, Okla., Mrs. Sarah Tash of Cato, and Harrison Clanton and Mrs. Otto Sands of near this city of a later marriage. The funeral was held at the home Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Clanton of Seligman and interment made at the Horner cemetery. Mr. Clanton was a civil war veteran and had been for years one of the county’s best citizens. He was highly esteemed by his neighbors and his friends were numbered by his acquaintances. Clanton Funeral The funeral of Edward Clanton Southeast of this city was held on Wednesday afternoon of last week, conducted by Rev. Clanton of Seligman who is a relative of Edward Clanton. He spoke feelingly of his relative and commented upon his virtues and of his standing as an up-right citizen. A large crowd of neighbors and friends were present to pay their last tributes of respect to their good neighbor and kind friend. In the sketch appearing in the last week's REPUBLICAN there were some errors due to the imperfect information received the morning the paper went to press. He was born in Tennessee not Arkansas and lived there before coming to Missouri. He leaves three sons and six daughter. Mrs. Rebecca Clark, Mrs. Mary Henson, Mrs. Mattie Henson, J. A. Clanton and Mrs. Florence Sands of near this city of a second marriage. Research Note: Edward was born in Trigg County, KY, not Arkansas. Margaret’s married name was Harbert, not Henbest. Grant and Sarah were children of the first marriage, not the second. |
