Text | Virgil R. Carter, 91, of Independence, formerly of Cassville, died December 5 in Medical Center of Independence.
Mr. Carter was born August 3, 1909, near Viola, the son of James Allen and Artie Cordell Carter. He lived most of his life in Cassville, attending school at Roaring River School, in what is now Roaring River State Park. He was a member of the fire department and worked as a night watchman for Forest Products Inc. in Cassville. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Cassville.
He married Mary Ellen Nance, and she preceded him in death in August of 1988. Survivors include one son, of Independence; one brother, Ellis Carter of Kansas City, Kansas; three sisters, Loraine Ball of Seligman, Mary Westphaling of Cassville, and Else Elding of Arlington, Virginia; two grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Merla Carter. Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, December 9, at Fohn Chapel in Cassville with Rev. Sid Allsbury officiating. Burial will be in Painter Cemetery in Shell Knob under the direction of Fohn Funeral Home of Cassville. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow, December 8, at the funeral home. |
