Text | Funeral services for Dr. Clarence Cardwell, 64-year old founder and owner of the Cardwell Hospital at Stella, were conducted in the high school auditorium there Sunday afternoon with the Rev. Charles Siler of Cassville officiating. He was assisted by the Rev. Milton Campbell and the Rev. Don Shepherd. Although Dr. Cardwell had not been well for some time, he still was active and death was unexpected. He died at the Grand Valley Hospital in Pryor, Okla. A native of that community, he attended medical school in St. Louis and began the practice of medicine at Stella. Beginning with a two room house for a hospital in 1919 his institution grew to its present three story building with 100-bed capacity under his management. He was a veteran of World War I; and member of the Newton County, Missouri, American and World Medical Association. He as also a member of the American College of Physicians and Surgeons. He was recognized in “Who’s Who In The Midwest” and “Who Is Important In Medicine.” Many Barry Countians were patients of Dr. Cardwell and He was well known in this area. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Ida Cardwell, and a daughter, Miss Cleta Cardwell, of the home. Funeral arrangements were under direction of the Pogue Funeral Home at Wheaton assisted by Doyle Williamson of the Davis-Williamson Funeral Home in Cassville. Research Note: Parents: W.
