Text | Elbert Burnett, a young man 21 years old, was drowned while swinging in Shoal Creek at Granby, Saturday evening. Burnett worked in the mines at Granby. Late Saturday afternoon he and some young men associates went down to Shoal Creek for a swim. The hole of water in which they were swimming is said to stand about 15 feet in depth. Burnett was seized with cramps and his companions attempted to rescue him but were unable to do so. One of the other young men came near being drowned in attempting to save Burnett. His body was not found until an expert diver located it about two hours after the tragedy occurred. His body was shipped to Leann where the funeral was held Monday, conducted by Rev. McKinzie of Madry. Young Burnett is said to have been an excellent young man. He was a member of the Church of God and been highly esteemed at his home near Leann where he lived as a boy and also at Granby where he had been working for the past six months. He leaves one brother, Ernest of Granby, and two sisters, Mrs. May Walker of Purdy and Mrs. Ester Berry of Tulsa, Okla. He was a cousin of W. C. Robertson, Supt. of the county farm. Mr. Robertson and his father, T. B. Robertson, attended the funeral. He was a step-son in the household of William Cowell. His mother was Nina J., born July 1870 in MO, with Tennessee born father and Arkansas born mother. Siblings of the Burnett family were given as Ernest L. and Ester A., and siblings of the Cowell surname were Ettie and Birdie. |
