Text | James "Verl" Burnette, age 93, of Washburn, Missouri, passed away Thursday, October 7, 2010, in his home.
He was born July 12, 1917, in Burns Holler, the son of Thomas and Annie Viola (McNabb) Burnette. On January 7, 1949, in Bentonville, Arkansas, he was united in marriage to Lavon Dodson, who preceded him in death on August 5, 2005. Also preceding him in death were his parents; three brothers, Eugene, Brice and Gaylord Burnette and one sister, Maxine Blythe. Surviving are one son, Gerald "Pete" Burnette and his wife, Terry of Washburn, Missouri; two daughters, Betty Sparkman and her husband, Dave of Cassville, Missouri and Barbara Snyder and her husband, Wayne of Washburn, Missouri; one sister, Lorene Davis of Eagle Rock, Missouri; two grandchildren, Gamon Sparkman and his wife, Shelley and Drew Sparkman and two great grandchildren, Samantha and Lauren Sparkman. Verl, as most people knew him, received his education at Washburn. He received his Lord as Savior at a young age and was of the Baptist faith. During World War II he was honored to serve in the United States Army as a Staff Sergeant. For several years he was employed for Dairy Craft in Monett as an evaporator operator. For twelve years he worked at Roaring River State Park, enjoying every minute. Some of his favorite pastimes were fishing, coon hunting, whittling and reading. He loved his kids and grandchildren and spent time telling "tall tales" to them. He was a staunch Republican – Conservative. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Friday, October 8, 2010, in Hickman Cemetery, Washburn, under direction of Fohn Funeral Home, Cassville. Reverend Bob Lawrence will conduct the services.
