Headline | YOUNG MAN KILLED BY FRISCO PASSENGER TRAIN SATURDAY NIGHT Lon Burnette is Instantly Killed on Railroad Track About One-half Mile North of Washburn |
Text | Lon Burnette, age 27 years, was run over by Frisco Passenger train No. 710, about ten o’clock, Saturday night, May 28, about one-half mile north of Washburn, and instantly killed. Young Burnett was a son of Mr. Andrew Burnett who lives only a mile or two north of Washburn. He had been to town and was on his way home, walking up the railroad track, when he was overtaken by Passenger train No. 710, due to pass through Washburn going north each evening at about ten o’clock. After running over Burnett the train stopped. This unusual circumstance attracted the attention of Fred Marquet who lives a short distance from where the accident occurred. Marquet went down to investigate. He identified the body as that of Lon Burnett. The body was taken to the Burnett home. The engineer and fireman on the train said they saw a man sitting on the track with his head in his hands but they were unable to stop the train before striking him. Both legs were practically several from the body. Justice of the Peace, J. A. Roller, acting as coroner, held an inquest over the body. His verdict was that Burnett had come to his death from having been stuck and run over by the train. Evidently Burnett had sat down upon the track, had fallen asleep and was not waked by the approaching train. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the home, conducted by Rev. J. T. Brattin of this city. Interment was made in the Washburn Prairie cemetery, under the direction of the Horine-Culver Funeral Service. His is survived by his parents, three brothers, Frank, Otis and Brookshire, and three sisters, Wanda, Verna and Betty Sue. Research Note: Death Cert # 15228 Name: Lon W.
