Text | Well Known Retired Cassville Merchant Succumbs To Pneumonia After Few Days, Illness. All Cassville and Barry County bowed their heads in grief last Saturday morning, when L.G. Brown, old time and beloved citizen of this community, passed away following a short illness and pneumonia. This excellent citizen suffered a paralytic stoke a few months ago from which he never fully recovered. Mr. Brown was one of the county’s oldest citizens, being 98 years, seven months, and 18 days old at the time of his passing. This excellent character was born near Raleigh, North Carolina. The moved with his parents to Tennessee when a young man, where he was united in marriage to Miss Catura Ann Templeton, on November 9, 1858, his splendid wife preceding him in death nine years ago. In the year 1874, he and family moved to Barry County, first locating in Capps Creek township, After residing there a few years, he moved to a farm on Shoal Creek, near the Swindle College. It was after a few years residence in that community, that he moved to Cassville and engaged in the mercantile business with the old well know firm of King, Bayless and Padgett, which was successfully operated for many years. Later on, he and his son, Lee acquired this noted store which they continued to operate for many years, being one of the oldest establishments of it kind in this part of the state. A few years ago, they disposed of the store, this splendid character retiring from business and making his home with his splendid son, Luther Brown and family of near Cassville, his son, Lee and family left for Salinas, California, where the has since been in similar business. Four children were born to the marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Brown, who are Luther of Cassville, Lee of California, and Mrs. Shade Wallen of Vinita, Ok., all of whom survive, and son Robert of St. Joe, Mo. who preceded his father in death a few years ago. In addition to these children, he leaves twelve grand-children, of which are: Roy Brown of Springfield, Preston of Monett, Leonard at home, and two sons of Robert Brown deceased. He also leaves three great-grand-children an done great-great-great grandson, all of whom were present at the funeral. There were five generations of this splendid family at the services. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Presbyterian church in Cassville, conducted by Rev. E.W. Love of Joplin, who abley pictured this excellent character and eulogized him for the honorable, clean and upright life which he had lived. The church was filled with sorrowing relatives and friends of this good man who came to pay their last love and respect. Interment was made in the oak Hill cemetery, beside his good wife, under the direction of Koon Funeral Service. A quartet composed of Mr. B. D. Wilks, Mrs. Glen Pearl, Clinton Blythe and J.W. Hisey furnished beautiful music at the services. Many beautiful floral emblems were received from near and distant friends of the deceased and his family. L. G. Brown was man in whom every one had explicit confidence. His word was his bond and his every act was to do right. He was a man who always attended strictly to his own affairs and was truthful sincere, honest and progressive. He had many friends who loved him sincerely. In his closing days, as well as in past years, this kind of character was given every care possible from the hands of those in whose home he lived. The Democrat joins the many friends of the bereaved family in extending sympathy in their sad hour of bereavement. |
