Headline CIVIL WAR VETERAN DIES AT AGE OF 93,
SERVED IN 8TH MO. CAVALRY
Text Robert S. Black One Among Last of Civil War Veterans Is County to Pass on. Passing away at the home of a daughter, W. A. Estes, in Monett, Saturday, June 29, Robert S. Black, a veteran of the Civil war, had lived the long life of 93 years, 9 months and 2 days. Death was caused by an attack of pneumonia.

Until a year or two ago, Mr. Black had enjoyed excellent health for a man so advanced in years. He would come to Cassville himself to look after paying his taxes and look after matters of that kind.

Funeral services were held at the Callaway Funeral Home in Monett Monday afternoon July 1st conducted by Rev. Winford Davis, assisted by Rev. Willard Crabb of Monett. Burial was in the Spring River cemetery at Verona.

Monday's Monett Time's gave the following sketch of Mr. Black's life.

He was born Sept. 27, 1841, at Bladesville, Tenn. As a boy of six he came with his parents to Missouri, locating at Hartville where he lived for two years, and then moved to Barry county, where he continued to reside.

At the age of 21 years he enlisted in the Union army at Springfield, and served three years as a member of company F, 8th Missouri cavalry. He was honorably discharged at Little Rock, Ark., in 1865, and one year later he was married to Malinda Pannell Stokes, who preceded him in death in 1899.

They were the parents of nine children, two of whom died infancy. One son, Charley H. Black was drowned in 1900. One daughter, Mrs. Charles Thomas, died in March 1926, and another daughter. Mrs. T. D. Stark, died February 28, 1930. Surviving daughters are Mrs. W. H. Suttles and Mrs. W. A. Estes, and the sons are R. A. Black and Arthur Black. His direct line of descendents includes 22 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and three great-great- grandchildren.
