Text | Mamie Lockwood Betterton, wife of Clifford Betteron of Exeter, died at the state hospital at Nevada, Monday afternoon. She was taken to the hospital Saturday. She was suffering from a nervous disorder, complicated with stomach and kidney trouble. The funeral was held at Exeter Wednesday afternoon and burial was at Washburn. Mamie Lavina Lockwood was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eli Lockwood and was born April 7 1903. She was married in 1918 to Clifford Betterton. They were the parents of three children. All of whom survive the mother. They are Marie 7; Helen 4; Marjorie, 3. Mrs. Betterton’s death was probably hastened by a tragedy in the family, which she witnessed. Her father died 13 years ago and her mother married Monroe Betterman, father of Clifford Betterman. They were were living in Vinita, Okla., in 1919 when Monroe Betterman became enraged at his wife and shot her down in cold blood in the presence of his family and tried to kill Mamie Betterman, his daughter-in-law. The nervous shock was so great that she never entirely recovered. She had been ill since last October. Last week she became violently ill and threatened the life of her family. On the advice of physicians she was taken to the state hospital but died a few days later. Besides her husband and children she is survived by two brothers, Fred Lockwood and Ralph Lockwood at Wichita. Kan.
