Text | ONLY BERNIECE BENTON, 82, of Shell Knob, Mo., died Sunday, April 18, 2004, in St. John's Regional Health Center in Springfield, Mo. She was born Nov. 15, 1921, near Rotan, Texas, on the Double Mountain Fork of the Brazos River, the daughter of Samuel Patrick and Audie Browning (Hudnall) Murphree. On Nov. 22, 1941, in Florence, Ala., she was united in marraige to Barney Garland Benton. She was preceded in death by her husband. She was also preceded in death by two grandsons, Robert B. Benton, Jr., and Samuel Patrick Benton; one brother, Samuel Jesse James Murphree, and her parents. She is survived by two sons, Barney G. Benton, Jr., and his wife, Julia, of Sunrise Beach, Mo., and Robert B. Benton, Sr. and his wife, Donna, of Shell Knob, Mo.; two daughters, Rose Ann Stiles of Pleasant Hill, Calif. and Karen S. Ratliff and her husband, Ron, of Wichita, Kans.; one brother, Soloman Laverne Murphree of Coolidge, Ariz.; one sister, Nina Ruth Trout of Glendale, Ariz.; 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Only and her family moved to Arizona when she was young. She graduated from Casa Grande High School in Casa Grande, Arizona. In 1956, she and Barney moved to Wichita, Kans., where she worked for DeVores & Sons for many years as an accountant. Following her retirement, she and Barney moved to Shell Knob in 1984 to enjoy the lake. She attended the Viola Baptist Church in Viola, Mo. She was an avid supporter of the Murphree Reunion and looked forward to attending. Funeral services were held Thursday, Apr. 22, 2004, in Williamson Funeral Home in Shell Knob. Rev. Jerry Rogers conducted the services. Burial followed in Painter Cemetery, Shell Knob. |
