Text | Dewey Lee Akin, age 83, of Verona, MO passed away on Sunday, October 4, 2009 at his residence. Dewey was born on August 19, 1926 in Barry County, the son of the late William Fred Akin and Ina Cordelia Hancock Akin. Dewey attended and graduated from Purdy High School. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Aurora, MO. Dewey served in the United States Army Air Corp, enlisting on August 14, 1944 at Camp Crowder, MO. He received the rank of Corporal and was decorated with the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Ribbon, Victory Medal and Good Conduct Medal before being honorably discharged on November 4, 1946 in Ft. Sheridan, IL. Dewey made his career as a self employed cabinet maker. He also owned and operated the Rocky Top Blueberry Farm, which, since 1982, is still operated by his family. Another passion in his life was his motorcycles. He especially liked his Indian motorcycle.
Dewey married Ida Jessilyn Young on January 2, 1949 in Monett, MO. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Dean, Herman, Vester and Howard Akin; and one sister, Pauline Hartsell. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday at Buchanan Funeral Home with Pastor Deny Lemaster officiating. Interment will be in the Purdy Cemetery. Military honors will be conducted by the American Legion. Memorial contributions have been requested to the Boy Scouts Troop #48, Aurora, MO, in care of the funeral home.
