Research Note: August 18, 1917, Cassville Democrat - Wm. Tennis, a good citizen and an old soldier died Saturday night from the infirmities of age. Interment made at Washburn Prairie cemetery, Sunday afternoon. Rev. P. H. Hodge conducting the service. A widow and a large family of grown children are left to mourn his loss. Donna's Note: In 1910, Barry Co., MO, he was 72 years old and listed himself born in OH, his father in KY, and his mother in PA. He had been married 44 years and his wife was Melvina. In 1900 he lived in Springdale, Washington Co., AR, and was age 62, Melvina his wife was age 61, born July 1838. She had 12 children, 11 living. - Phyllis' Note: He was the son of Addison Tennis and Lucinda Laney. His wife was Melvina Delano Hust. Melvina died at Kansas City, KS on Oct. 22, 1919. Their picture is at ancestry.com. William was a Civil War Veteran on the Union side. He enlisted on Aug. 28, 1862 at Christian Co., MO and served in AR as a Private, in Co. Research Note: His sister was married to James Erwin and he was living with them in 1880 - listed as brother-in-law. He married Mary E. "Molly" Cheek, Washburn, MO, Mar. 29, 1888. Phyllis' Note: His full name was Leon Alonzo and was the son of Henry Thomas and Nancy Erwin. Believed to be of Indian descent. Notes at ancestry.com say information was copied from old Bible that Mary E. "Molly" Thomas had for several years. She gave it to John Cheek, her brother, in 1917 and it was in the Cheek possession until Sept. 1965 when Charles Cheek gave it to Jesse Lee Thomas at LaSalle, Colo. It was in the Thomas and Cheek families for near 150 years according to Jesse Lee Thomas, 2-10-1966. Also preceding her in death were her parents; aunt and uncle and one sister, Mildred Jean McLandsborough. Research Note: According to researcher, Cheryl, he married Charity Barnes in Sep. 27, 1799, Caroline Co., Virginia. He is buried next to John I. Duncan, his son-in-law. Phyllis' Note: Godfrey's daughter Margaret born VA, married Judge John Iverson Duncan and they are both buried in Washburn Prairie. Godfrey came to the U. S. during young manhood and settled in VA, where he engaged in farming. After many years he settled among the pioneer farmers in IN. Later he went to Barry Co., MO, and there he passed away Nov. 4, 1843, at an advanced age. He and Charity had 12 children. Herbert worked as a chicken catcher when he was very young; he then worked for Walmart as a truck driver for 30-plus years and was one of the first drivers hired by Sam Walton. He was also a self-employed contractor for McClinton-Anchor. Herbert was the ultimate hero and protector of his family. He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary Townsend; son, Troy Townsend; brother, Johnny Townsend; sister, Jo Walden; and granddaughter, Casey Brace. Funeral services were be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, 2015, at Washburn High School gymnasium in Washburn, MO. - Herbert and his granddaughter Casey, were both murdered by the father of 2 of Casey's children at Herbert's home in Washburn. Casey was dead at the scene. Herbert received 4 gunshot wounds but still managed to get to the telephone and call 911. He later died in Springfield after being air lifted to Cox South Hosp. Research Note: She was the daughter of James Abraham and Rosa (Huckabee) Watts. On August 3, 1950, she was united in marriage to Lowell Treadwell and to this union four children were born. On January 11, 1980, she married Joe Webb, who preceded her in death on May 22, 1997. Also preceding her in death were her parents; three sisters, Faye Horn, Cheerful Knouf and Calleen Treadwell and one brother, Tobe Watts. Maevene grew up and received her education in Marshall, Arkansas, where she graduated from high school. In 1959, she moved from Marshall to Washburn, to make her home. Research Note: His death certificate reads that he was a retired physician. His father, Jacob Trowbridge was born in VT and his mother was given as Mary Boomer, born Vermont. The cause of death was lumbar pneumonia. Dr. L. B. Northcutt was his doctor. He was married but his wife's name wasn't given (His wife was Celia Ann Turner). He was age 67 years and 21 days old when he died. J. H. Trowbridge, Washburn, MO, was the informant. - Cassville Republican, Feb. 16, 1911 - Francis Marion Trowbridge was born at Swan Creek, Gallia County, Ohio, Feb 2, 1844. He served one and one half years in the Federal army in the Civil War. He removed to Lucas County, Iowa, in 1867 and engaged in the practice of medicine for 12 years until his failing health caused him to retire and move to a more congenial climate of the south. He married Miss Celia A. Turner of La Grange, Lucas County, Iowa, May 6, 1876. He lived on a farm in Carroll County, Ark., for 18 years them moving to Washburn, MO, in 1901 where he lived until his death Feb. 4, 1911.
