At the age of 11, he and his family moved to Washburn, Missouri, out on the prairie. He walked four miles to school every day and graduated from the eighth grade. His father needed him to work at home so he did not attend high school. He moved to Oklahoma where he worked for Swift Baking Company and Olliver Implement Company and on to Kansas City, Missouri where he was employed by General Mills as a grain shoveler, grain mixer and weight master. General Mills offered him a four-year maintenance course which he completed in two years and nine months with a ninety-six percent. Leonard served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. Following his service he returned to Missouri and worked at Ken-Ark and Wal-Mart, where he retired after eleven years. - He second married Velma Ambolene (Robinette) Tilford and she is buried at Seligman Cemetery next to her first husband Arlus Tilford. - His Side of Stone Fohn Funeral Home
