Daniels. - Cassville Democrat - The many friends of Mrs. F.P. Daniels, an old time and highly respected citizen, residing near Washburn will be grieved to know that she died last Thursday, following an illness extending over the past month. Mrs. Daniels was an excellent lady of lovable character and stood high in the estimation of all her acquaintances. She had lived in that part of the county 16 years, coming here with her splendid husband from Watson, MO. For many years, Mrs. Daniels was one of the county officials of the W.C.T.U., organization and was a consistent worker for the advancement of that splendid cause. She always took an active part in church work and was a consistence member of the Presbyterian church. She was born at Watson, Mo., and was 57 years old. She had been married to her estimable husband, which is a prominent and high standing citizen of this county 31 years, and leaves one sister, who resides in McCune, Kansas, and two brothers in St. Louis, to mourn her passing. The sister and one brother attended the funeral services. Funeral services were conducted Saturday afternoon after which the remains were laid to rest in the Washburn Prairie cemetery. Research Note: He was the son of J.R and Minnie (Shockley) Davis. Gary attended Southwest High School in Washburn, where he played basketball and graduated in 1965. On December 19, 1966, in Seligman Gary married the love of his life, Mary Jane Mitchell. Gary began his college career in Rolla, Missouri, going on to Southwest Missouri State University, and eventually graduating cum laude, with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration in Washington, D.C. Gary would then go on to a long and successful career in law enforcement, dedicating 33 years of his life to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, even serving under the highly esteemed J. Edgar Hoover. In the course of his work with the FBI, Gary would live in various cities across this great nation including Knoxville, New York, Houston, El Paso and back to headquarters in Washington D.C. He began substitute teaching at Cassville High School shortly after retiring. In 2016, Gary was elected Sheriff of Barry County, where he served until 2020. He continued serving local citizens on boards including the Barry County Fire Department and 911 Emergency Management. He was also involved in the Washburn Civic Association. Research Note: One of 4 stones in the "Davis woodman of the world memorial" plot. Oliver D. Davis is buried to the right of Henrietta B. Davis, his wife. Donna's Note: Betty posted May 2, 1922 as the death date but his death certificate documents it as 1921. The stone reads May 24, 1921, too. He was a postal service worker and died in an automobile accident. - KILLED TUESDAY IN AUTO WRECK: Oliver D. Davis of Washburn Found Dead, Pinned Under His Ford Car In Ditch North of Washburn - Oliver Davis, generally known all over the county as "OL" Davis, a prominent citizen of Washburn was found dead Tuesday evening in a ditch just north of Washburn, pinned under his car. Mr. Davis has for a number of years been a rural letter carrier out of Washburn. His route is to the northeast of Washburn. Tuesday evening while coming into Washburn from the north on his route, in some way, not known, his car was wrecked. The accident occurred just north of Washburn near a culvert in the road. About an hour and on-half after time for Mr. Davis to report at the Washburn post office, Roy Meyers happening along that way found him dead. Mr. Davis had for a number of years been recognized as one of the county's leading citizens. He represented Barry County for one term in the State legislature. He was a man of more than average ability, a good, substantial, public spirited citizen. He was a member of the board of Directors of the Bank of Washburn and a useful citizen in his home community and in the county. He was a brother of J. S. Davis of Cassville, E. W. and Henry Davis of Wheaton. He leaves a wife and several children, most of whom are married. She had been in falling health for a year or two and was taken to an invalid home in St. James. She operated the telephone office here for years and was one of the 220 converted in Bro. W.
