He was a former professional basketball player for eight years for teams in KS, CO, and OK and had played in 33 states. - Cassville Republican, Apr. 20, 1933 - Gus Babb of Washburn and Miss Opha Cheek, a teacher in the Exeter School, were married Sunday, Apr. 16, at the home of Mr. and Mrs J. T. Dunlap, near Seligman, Justice Dunlap said the ceremony. Gus is a son of Mrs. Emmett Babb of the Washburn Community, and a brother of Mrs. Rolland Hutchens of this city. He is a graduate of the Washburn High school and has during the past two or three years won a wide reputation in athletics, being a member of the "Terrible Swedes" basketball team which has toured the country over. Research Note: Daughter of Buddie Ernest and Mildred Irene (Henry) Hendrix. She was a 1960 graduate of Southwest High School. She married James Banks on Sep. 30, 1961, in Exeter; he survives. They celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary in 2021. Retiring after 25 years at FASCO, Betty and her husband James owned and operated Pstarr's Place in Exeter from 1997-2000. They then worked for the Corps of Engineers for 14 years as campground hosts, where Betty's friendly, outgoing personality led to longtime friendships across the country. Betty was very close to her daughters, and her grandchildren were a source of great happiness. Sunday dinners at her house were very special, and her family loved taking turns choosing their favorite meals. Betty was also a talented quilter, and her quilts are a legacy her family will forever cherish. In addition to husband James, survivors include two daughters; four grandchildren; one sister; three brothers; three sisters-in-law; and many nieces and nephews. Research Note: Phyllis' Note: Democrat July 15, 1929 - Mamie Lockwood Betterton, wife of Clifford Betterton of Exeter, died at the state hospital at Nevada, Monday afternoon. She was taken to the hospital Saturday. She was suffering from a nervous disorder, complicated with stomach and kidney trouble. The funeral was held at Exeter Wednesday afternoon and burial was at Washburn. Mamie Lavina Lockwood was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eli Lockwood and was born April 7 1903. She was married in 1918 to Clifford Betterton. They were the parents of three children. All of whom survive the mother. They are Marie 7; Helen 4; Marjorie, 3. Mrs. Betterton,s death was probably hastened by a tragedy in the family, which she witnessed. Her father died 13 years ago and her mother married Monroe Betterman, father of Clifford Betterman. They were were living in Vinita, Okla., in 1919 when Monroe Betterman became enraged at his wife and shot her down in cold blood in the presence of his family and tried to kill Mamie Betterman, his daughter-in-law. The nervous shock was so great that she never entirely recovered. She had been ill since last October. Last week she became violently ill and threatened the life of her family. On the advice of physicians she was taken to the state hospital but died a few days later. Besides her husband and children she is survived by two brothers, Fred Lockwood and Ralph Lockwood at Wichita. Kan. Darla's Note: She was a daughter of Elia and Alzada Whittington Lockwood married Ernest Clifford Betterton, born Feb. 1897 son of Monroe and Laura McCoy Betterton. She was born March 8, 1937, at Washburn, the daughter of Lemma Lester and Ola (Pippin) Rose. On Dec. 30, 1953, at Exeter she was united in marriage to Ronnie Gene Black, who survives. Also surviving are: a daughter; three brothers; Dennie Rose of Springfield and Denver Rose and C.S. Rose, both of Cassville; three sisters, Ina Stephens of Washburn and Olene, and Fern. She was preceded in death by her parents, a son, Michael Black, three brothers and a sister. She received her education at Washburn. She attended two years at Tulsa School of Business. For two and a half years she resided in San Antonio, Texas, then in California. In 1965 she moved back to Tulsa, remaining there until 1991 when she moved back to Barry County to make her home. She was a lifetime member of the Federation of Fly Fishers, serving as a director, was on the executive committee, a senior advisor and served as vice president of Tulsa Fly Fishers. She was named Woman of the Year in 1990 at the International Conclave. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Cassville. Funeral services were held Sunday, March 28, in Fohn Funeral Home, Cassville. Ron Black and Rev. John Duncan conducted the services. He was a Navy veteran. He worked for Golden Aviation. He moved to Washburn in 1979. He married Teresa Tittes. He was preceded in death by his father, Troy Bozeman. His mother was Charlene Baker. Lenny died Tuesday from injuries received when the small plane that he was flying crashed in a field in Longview, Mo. His passenger was killed also. Graveside services were 7 p.m. April 12 at Washburn Prairie Cemetery with Rev. Bob Scott officiating under the direction of Fohn Funeral Home of Cassville. The newspaper has 1896 and his age at 71 which would be correct with the birth date of 1825 - September 3, 1896, Cassville Republican, Cassville, MO- Joseph Noah Brooks of Washburn died, age 71 years, and 8 months. The burial was in the Washburn Prairie Cemetery by the I.O.O.F and AF & AM Societies. - Obit for Rebecca - Rogers Democrat: Rebecca E. Carden was born near Pea Ridge, Ark. April 5, 1843. At the age of fourteen she united with the Missionary Baptist church. She was born and raised within about 2 1/2 miles of Elkhorn and was living there when the Battle of Pea Ridge was fought. She had four brothers in the Confederate army and lost one during the war. In 1882 she was united in marriage. to Rev. J.N. Brooks, a Baptist minister of Washburn, MO. To this union three children were born: Mrs. James Lee of Pea Ridge; Charles, who died in infancy; Mrs. Rubert Stokes of Rogers. Her husband preceded her in death thirty years, dying in 1896. She then moved back to Pea Ridge, having only been away from Benton county sixteen years out of the 82. She departed this life January 4, 1926 at the age of 82 years, eight months and 29 days, and was laid to rest in the Pea Ridge cemetery. She leaves besides her two daughters a sister, Mrs. Sarah Williams, aged 87 years; three stepdaughters, Mrs. P.R. Rodge of Butterfield, Mo.; Mrs. Phillip Oakley of Afton, OK; Mrs. N.J. Kelley of Joplin, Mo. and one stepson, J.W. His death certificate gives very little information and doesn't list his parents names, however, it does list Ella Burley as his wife. Research Note: He was a son of Claude and Vesta (Hoog) Butler. Curtis moved with his family to Porterville, California and became a genuine cowboy, who was very involved with the rodeo circuit and team roping. On November 3, 1956 he married Sharon Bennett in Porterville, California. Curtis worked as a carpenter most of his life. Curtis was baptized as one of Jehovah's Witnesses in 1971 at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, California. In 1999 Curtis and his family moved back to Thomas Hollow and lived within 4 miles of his original birthplace until his passing. His love of children influenced his decision to become involved in the foster care system where he touched the lives of numerous children. White Funeral Home
