Feb. 2, 2024 Springfield, Greene Co., MO |
Research Note: Son of Antony and Mary Golubski [Maliszkiewicz] McMeley. He attended the 1-room Dry Valley grade school. He graduated Pierce City High School in 1957, where he lettered in football. Raymond met his wife, Mary Helen, while in high school and it was love at first sight. Upon graduating high school he joined the army and was stationed at Fort Jackson, SC, where he served for 3 years as a tank gunner. After an honorable discharge, Raymond started work at the University of MO Research Farm at Mt. Vernon. He married Mary Helen in 1961, and they lived in the large Victorian farmhouse on the Research Farm's property. Two sons were born there. The growing family moved to Monett and eventually built their first home on Nellie Avenue, where a third son was born. They moved to their farm north of town in 1985, where they remained until 2023, when they joined their new loving community at the Fremont in Springfield, MO. Raymond worked for Marsh Engineering and Mid-America Dairies before joining MFA for the majority of his working life. He worked really hard there as a plant manager when he was not playing dominoes with his coworkers or giving the farmers a hard time. Raymond knew that the key to a good life was laughter, adventure, and connection to people. After Mary Helen dragged Raymond to his first square dance in their younger years, they danced through the rest of their married life, eventually joining the Boot Kickers and hosting many a party at their farm, including one infamous pig roast. He always prioritized camping at Table Rock Lake and family vacations out west and to see extended family. Raymond and Mary continued their travels, including to South America and Europe, long after their children flew the coop and started their own lives and families. After retiring in Dec. 2002, Raymond went on a solo bicycling trip across MO on the Katy Trail in 2003. It was such a success, he repeated it twice with children and grandchildren in tow, and many a story to tell! He is survived by his wife, Mary Helen McMeley; his three sons; his grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents and 6 siblings. | Buchanan Funeral Home L. Planchon a prominent farmer living near Monett and brother of Paul Planchon of this city, met death last Sunday morning at his farm home south of Monett as a result of an attack by a bull. Mr. Planchon had gone to move the bull which was chained to a stake near the house. A few minutes later his wife's attention was attracted by the barking of a dog. Upon going to the door she discovered that the bull had attacked her husband and she attempted to frighten him away by shouting and throwing rocks. Her husband warned her of the danger to both of them and instructed her to return to the house and phone for help. Upon her return it was apparent that her husband was dead, but the bull continued to gore and trample the body tossing it into the air occasionally with its horns. A neighbor soon arrived and shot the bull a number of times with a shotgun, which hardly detracted his attention from the victim. A few minutes later Wm. Burrows of Monett arrived on the scene. When the bulls attention had been attracted, he made a mad dash for the car and as he drew near Burrows fired one shot from a high powered rifle which struck the bull squarely between the eyes killing him instantly. With his horns and hoofs the bull had mangled and crushed the body beyond recognition. John Planchon was born in Uruguay, South America, December 20, 1860 and with his parents came to the United States in 1875. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. F. F. Dodson at the Waldensian church south of Monett Tuesday afternoon and the body buried in the cemetery at that place. - November 7, 1912, Thursday, Cassville Republican - Thursday afternoon J. P. S. Planchon with his horse and buggy was thrown from the high embankment near the slaughter house south of town. He was considerably bruised and the buggy smashed into kindling wood.
