ARNAUD, Emile | Sept. 8, 1857 France |
Dec. 9, 1932 MO |
Research Note: Son of Stephen Arnaud and Marie Marchel. His wife was Pauline Barriquand. - Goodspeed's History - Emile Arnaud, one of the successful farmers and stock raisers of Capp's Creek Township, Barry co., Mo., was born in France on September 8, 1856. He is a son of Stephen and Marie Arnaud, who were born on September 9 and July 4, 1829, respectively. Stephen Arnaud was extensively engaged in raising silk worms and growing grapes for wine in his native country and for five years was mayor of his commune. In 1876 he immigrated to America, settling in Capp's Creek Township, Barry Co., Mo., where he became the owner of 360 acres of fine land. Here he died in 1882. His widow died in 1886 on November 28. The were the parents of five children, viz: Emmeline, Emile, Louise, Simeon (who died in 1884 at the age of twenty years) and Edith. Since the death of the parents the children have been keeping house, all living together. Emile, being the only son living, has had full control of the old home place and has managed it as skillfully as many men would have done who have had years of experience. He has not only retained the old place, but has added acre after acre and tract after tract until he now owns 720 acres, all of which is valuable land. In addition to cultivating the soil and raising grass, he is much interested in growing blooded stock. He owns "Gray Eagle," sired by an imported Norman stallion. The former, now four years old, is eighteen hands high, weighs 1,600 pounds, and is considered the best horse in the county. Mr. Arnaud also owns some very fine blooded short-horn cattle. He is a progressive man, who is fully up with the spirit of the times, being held in high esteem by all who know him. He is a member of the WALDENSIAN Church and is president of the Bible Society of the same. - Cassville Republican, July 25, 1912 - E. Arnaud, a prominent farmer of south of town, is quite badly cut and bruised as the result of trouble with Mike Flaherty of this place last Saturday. Mr. Arnaud was leaving Pierce City ahead of Mr. Flaherty who was driving fast and tried to pass the first team. Mr. Flaherty's rig ran against the Arnaud carriage, throwing the occupants out. One of Mr. Flaherty's horses was thrown to the ground, the men had some words in regard to the accident which lead to blows. Mr. Arnaud was overpowered and held for about an hour until officers arrived from Pierce City. He was so badly cut and bruised that he was hurried to Dr. Worley's hospital where his wounds were dressed, the worst being a knife cut on the forehead. A warrant was sworn out for the arrest of Mr. Flaherty on charge of assault, the preliminary trial to be held Wednesday morning at Pierce City, provided Mr. Arnaud is able to appear. Monett Times - Cassville Republican, Aug. 7, 1919 - E. Arnaud, one of this county's prominent farmers of near Monett attended the county school board convention here Wednesday of last week. He is an enthusiastic school man. He and Mrs. Arnaud visited Kemper Military school and Stephens College in June where they had a son and a daughter attending school. - Waldensians of Barry County, MO | Goodspeed Online Newspapers Phyllis Long Photo Jay Trace |

BOWMAN, Wendell "Jack" | Feb. 14, 1939 Pierce City, Lawrence Co., MO |
Nov. 14, 2017 MO Veterans Home, Mt. Vernon, MO |
Research Note: He was the son of the late Carl Xenophan Bowman and Dahlia Marie (Snyder) Bowman. After graduating from Pierce City High School in 1957, Wendell Bowman attended the University of Missouri in Columbia from January 1958 to March 1958. At this time, becoming a Forest Ranger seemed to be what his vocation would be. However, Bowman decided after three months of schooling that this was not what he really desired. Bowman, known as Jack in the Pierce City area, has traveled extensively since leaving the University and after joining the United States Army in April of 1958. Basic training for Bowman was at Fort Leonard Wood. Six months of radio teletype school followed at Fort Gordon, GA. Bowman served three years in the Army. Upon being discharged from the Army, he entered the Radio Operator Electronic Technician School in St. Louis at Bailey Institute of Technology and graduated. For Bowman the Army had been quite interesting and educational those first three years. Once again he signed with the Army and spent the next nine years serving the United States. Bowman was assigned to a security agency, Morse Intercept School, in Fort Devens, MA, for approximately four months. In 1963, he was a Morse Intercept Operator in Okinawa. After working several months in Okinawa, the Army re-assigned Bowman to the 400th ASA Special Operations detachment, 1st Special Forces group. While with the 1st Special Forces group, time was spent in the following locations: one training exercise to Taiwan, 1963; parachute school in Okinawa and one trip to Vietnam for three months, 1964 and one trip to Vietnam for two months, 1965. Bowman returned to the states in 1966 and was assigned to a school in Fort Meade, MA for more training before being assigned once again to the Intercept School in Okinawa. While in Okinawa, Bowman was taking part in Parachute exercises when he accidentally dislocated his left arm while jumping from a helicopter. If dislocating an arm was not enough, Bowman accidentally shot himself in the leg while home on a 30-day leave before returning to Vietnam for a full tour of duty. After spending six months in the hospital, he was given a medical discharge in December of 1971. Bowman enrolled in the Central Institute of Technology at Kansas City and graduated in 1972 with a bachelor's degree in engineering technology. Shortly after graduation, Bowman began work for the Federal Aeronautics Association (FAA) in 1972 and retired in 1994. Jack was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Richard Bowman; and niece, Patricia Ruth Bowman; and special friend, Marvin Seaton. | Buchanan Funeral Home Phyllis Long |

COURDIN, Marguerite (MONDON-MARIN) (PONTET) | Mar. 25, 1835 Bobbio-Pellice, Waldensian Valley, Italy |
Dec. 1, 1919 | SSW: Stephen Etienne, Jr. - Inscription: "Marguerite Nee Mondon-Marin" - Research Note: She was the daughter of Jean Mondon-Marin and Madeleine Geymonat. - Courdin History at findagrave.com - Marguerite Courdin was a most remarkable woman. She was born in Bobbio-Pellice in the Waldensian Valleys of Europe, in the Alps near the French Italian border. She was a direct descendant of Capt. Jean Mondon who was second in command under Henry Arnaud when the Waldensians went into exile in Switzerland. She was a small woman, but had great courage. In her younger days she had golden blonde hair and beautiful brown eyes. Her father died when she was 3 and her older brother saw to it that she had an education. She first married Jacques Pontet and they had a daughter, Madeline Pontet, born Jan. 1858. Jacques Pontet died soon after. The older Pontets were well off, but Marguerite was made to do the hard work, caring for the cows and goats and making butter and cheese. The Pontet's cared for the baby, but Marguerite became the family slave. In the summer she drove the cows and goats high up in the Alps to the mountain pastures. She stored the butter and cheeses in mountain caves. Then ever so often she walked down the steep mountain trails carrying the cheese and butter in a basket on her back. She always remembered the sight of Mt. Blanc, looming high in the distant background. She always carried a small Bible in her pocket and that was her solace and peace with God. It was at this time, 1862, in Uruguay, South America, where a large number of Waldensians had earlier emigrated, that Stephen Etienne Courdin, Jr. was left a widower and left with a tiny, ten day old son. His mother, Catherine Cairus Courdin, knew of Marguerite Pontet's sad plight in the Pontet home back in Europe, and somehow Catherine contrived it so that Marguerite came to South America to marry her son, Stephen Etienne Jr. Marguerite and her tiny daughter, Madeline, sailed to Uruguay on a French freighter. During the 3 month journey their ship was wrecked by a fierce storm on a rocky island in the vicinity of the Canary Islands. For 3 days and nights the crew and passengers worked, using mattresses and anything available to repair the holes in their ship. Later, after resuming their journey, they were attacked by Pirates. Cannons were fired across the bow of their ship, terrorizing them. Their Captain ordered them to line up, with no panic, and no talking. The Captain, alone, would do the talking. The pirates threw grappling hooks, then climbed aboard, settling all over the ship. They were very evil appearing, tattered clothing, jangling jewelry and knives strapped to their belts. The crew and passengers on the freighter expected to be made to walk the plank, or to have their ship blasted into the sea. The Pirates had been watching for a ship carrying gold to South America. They were so disgusted with the poverty of the freighter that the chief pirate just spat in the face of the freighter's captain and then left. Weeks later, the little freighter limped into a South American port, low on food and fresh water and all half starved. Marguerite and Stephen Jr. were married in Uruguay on Sept. 6, 1864. Five children were born to them in South America and a younger son was born to them in the US after emigrating here in 1875 with a group of other Waldensians who were not satisfied with life in South America. They settled in southwest MO and bought land from the Atlantic and Pacific Railway. They founded the Waldensian Church 40 acres of land being donated by the Railway for the church. Marguerite was again left a widow at 46 years of age, after being in the States only 6 years. Stephen Jr. died of pneumonia in 1881, during a severe winter. Marguerite lived to be 84 years of age, dying at her home south of Monett MO in 1919. Her last years were spent living with her daughter, Madeline Pontet. Mother of Marguerite Courdin Combe. Grandmother of Blanche Combe Hagler. Great grandmother of Edwina Hagler White. - Another Photo | Marriage Record Story Phyllis Long Photo Ralph and Betty Lamberson Photos Jay Trace |

CUENDET, E. Kathryn "Katy" (GRASS) | Apr. 16, 1928 Monett, Lawrence Co., MO |
Nov. 11, 2023 Oak Pointe, Monett, Lawrence Co., MO |
SSW: Gaylord Wayne - Inscription: "Married May 9, 1948" - Research Note: Daughter of the late Robert and Barbara (Hoffelder) Grass. Katy was a graduate of Monett High School, Class of 1945. She furthered her education at the Monett Jr. College. It was shortly after graduating from High School that Katy began a forty-four-year career in banking. She began at Gillioz Bank and Trust Company in 1946 and retired in 1990 from UMB Bank as Vice-President. During her long career, she partnered with and built friendships with a lot of families in the Monett and surrounding area by working with them to meet their financial goals. Katy gave back to her community as much as she could and volunteered for many years with Loaves and Fishes and was on the Crosslines board. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, gardening, cooking, reading, watching movies, tending to her flowers and her garden, traveling and playing cards, especially pinochle and pitch. She married the love of her life Gaylord Wayne Cuendet on May 9, 1948, in Monett. They built their life together based on their faith, hard work, commitment to each other and family. Katy and Gaylord owned and operated Cuendet Garden, a 'Fresh Vegetable' store and a very popular autumnal 'Pumpkin Patch'. As a family, they embraced the fellowship of the First Presbyterian Church in Monett, MO, always lending a hand in projects or events to help the community. Gaylord and Katy were a popular couple, and their marriage was full of many blessings… one of the greatest gifts to them was the welcoming of their baby girl, Claudia Gay. Claudia brought with her much love and brought them closer together as a family. Gaylord and Katy couldn't imagine life being any better…until they were blessed with a grandson, Travis Ash. The moment they saw him, a bond was made to stand the test of time. If there is anything deeper than unconditional love, that would explain the twinkle in Gaylord and Katy's eyes when they looked upon their beloved grandson. Katy's little canine companion "Dolly" was dear to her. Katy knew as soon as she saw Dolly's sweet face that they were destined to be best friends…one small problem, Dolly was her Grandson Travis's dog! Well, with the help of a few treats in Katy's pocket and the promise to Dolly that she could always snuggle in her lap - at any time- the deal between these two girls was made. Travis knew it was fruitless to fight this girl bonding so he agreed to the deal, with the agreement that he could pet Dolly when he visited his "Granny". Over the years, Katy and Dolly became best friends, taking care of each other in kind, playful and gentle ways. Dolly had no idea that she was a dog because Katy always treated her like "family". Wherever Katy was, so was Dolly…Travis would come to know that he had given his Granny the best gift anyone could give, …the love of Dolly. We are certain they are together now, catching up and enjoying each other's company. Katy is survived by her daughter; her grandson; and a host of nieces, nephews and extended family and friends. Katy was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three brothers, Art Grass, Richard Grass and Ernie Grass; and one sister, Margaret Jackson. We will miss our moments with Katy and treasure each memory. Katy's life will live on through those who love her. Katy would always make saying goodbye easy - she would wave and say, "See ya later alligator in my blue suede shoes!" | Buchanan Funeral Home L.Pearce FindaGrave Photo Jay Trace |
