Mar. 12, 1892 | Inscription: "Phillips, W. H.- Co H 15 Mo Cav." - Research Note: Son of Anderson C. Phillips and Sarah "Sally" Cox. William Henderson Phillips married Susan A. Martin on June 17, 1866 in Barry Co., MO. William Henderson Phillips' common law wife was Sarah Catherine Littrell. Another common law wife/girl friend was Celia Ann Hundley who was the ex wife of his brother Harvey. Note at ancestry says Henderson was murdered by Celia and then husband Caleb Brown. - The Green Forest Tribune, March 17, 1892 - Henderson Phillips Of Golden, MO., Shot and Killed instantly last Saturday - Henderson Phillips was shot and killed by Caleb Brown at Golden, Missouri, last Saturday. A load of buckshot was emitted into Phillips' head and body. After the shot was fired the horse ran about one hundred yards before the murdered man fell off, the horse was shot and will also die. Phillips and his son were passing near Browns' house where Brown and his wife were clearing ground. They were all provided with guns and only a few words were passed until Brown drew his gun and fired the deadly shot. Phillip's son, no doubt would have made things warm for him, but Brown's wife leveled her gun on him and marched the young fellow on. Young Phillips went and procured the service of the sheriff, who immediately proceeded to arrest Brown and his wife. The coroner's jury rendered a verdict that Phillips came to his death by gunshot from the hands of Caleb Brown. Brown's wife is held as aiding in the murder. It is not known to us to what led to the difficulty, but Phillips is generally regarded an outlaw and it is thought by some that Brown was justifiable. Phillips had three living wives, among whom, are Sade Littrell. He is also a brother to the man who shot our townsman, L. E. Harbert, during the late war. | Headstone Darla Ball Marbut GGG-Grandaughter Jan Mintiens Census MO Marriage Records Newspaper Item Phyllis Long Photo Jack Fly |

Frank Roberts, Bristol, OK, was the informant. Mathew H. Roberts married Pauline Parker on Oct. 15, 1877 in Barry Co., MO. - Cassville Democrat, May 31, 1934 - JUDGE MAT ROBERTS PASSES AT GOLDEN MONDAY A.M. AGE 79 OLD TIME GOLDEN CITIZEN WAS WELL AND FAVORABLY KNOWN THRUOUT COUNTY; SERVED ON COUNTY COURT - Judge Mat Roberts well know Golden merchant, died at his home there Monday morning, following an extended illness. This splendid character had lived all his life in that section and was one of Barry county's honorable and high standing citizens. Matthew Harbert Roberts was born May 29, 1854 on a farm near Golden, and was 79 years old. With the exception of a few years during the civil war, which were spent at his parent's old home in Rushville, Ill., while his father serviced in the Union army, his entire life has been lived in the Golden country. Soon after the war he returned to this county. He engaged in the general mercantile business at Golden for many years and was well and favorably known throughout that section, as well as other parts of the county. On December 15, 1877, he was married to Miss Pauline Parker to which union was born six children, one boy and five girls. One daughter preceded him in death. Those surviving are Mrs. T. H. Weddington, Golden; Frank Roberts, Bristow, Okla.: Mrs. O. L. Horine, Golden; Mrs. J. H. Magers, Compton, Calif., and Mrs. Ray Sisco. Golden. He is also survived by his excellent wife, who with the children gave this good citizen every care possible to comfort him in his closing days. He also leaves 21 grand children and 14 great-grandchildren. Forty years ago he professed faith in Christ and united with the Christian church and always lived a consistent religious life. He always took an active part in all civic and public affairs and served one term as Judge of the County Court of the county from the Eastern district and made a splendid official. One ambition of this splendid character's life, was to have a good highway form his community and a bridge across White River. He lived to see two bridges across that stream and he was very active in making them possible. At this time surveyors are at work on a route for a highway into the Golden country which was most gratifying to him, even though it came at a late hour in his life. Funeral services were conducted at the family home Wednesday afternoon by Rev. Jas. Brattin, Cassville, after which the remains were laid to rest in Viney cemetery, near his home, under direction of the Horine-Culver Funeral service of Cassville. Masonic rites were conducted at the grave by members of the Cassville lodge. A quartet composed of Owen Frost, Floyd Inman, Mrs. Clarence Stiles, and Jack Hisey, of this city, furnished music at the services. At the request of the family, Mrs. John Ray sang a solo. A large number of grieved relatives and friends attended the services and many beautiful floral emblems were received by the bereaved family as an expression of the high esteem in which he was held. It was the writer's good fortune to have been intimately acquainted with this splendid character most all his life. He was a man who possessed many friends and was a kind and loving husband, father and friend. The Democrat joins the many friends of the bereaved family in extending heartfelt sympathy in their sad hour of bereavement. - May 8, 1909, Saturday, Cassville Democrat - Cyclone Injuries: At Mr. Roberts' store, Mrs. Roberts, her daughter and granddaughter, daughter of Tilden Weddington, were in the store and escaped serious injury but were badly bruised up; Mat Roberts was on the street and was picked up and thrown against a tree, breaking four ribs and otherwise injuring him, but not seriously. - November 17, 1917, Cassville Democrat - Biography Grand Jury: M. TUCKER, Martha P. (LEWIS) | Dec. 13, 1841 TX |
Aug. 1, 1919 Golden, Barry Co., MO |
Research Note: Daughter of William Lewis and Eliza (Sullivan) Lewis. Wife of Judge Richard Tucker. - Obit: MRS. RICHARD TUCKER DEAD - A splendid life has closed with an excellent record on the right side of the ledger, that was beautifully balanced in life's blood, assuring her of sweet rest in the mansions of eternal glory in the Holy City, where her loved ones can fain admission by living the same beautiful life that was lived by their mother during life. The opportunity is before them without money or price. Mrs. Martha P. Lewis was born in Texas in December 1844 and came to Barry county with her parents when a young girl and grew to womanhood in this county and then married the late Judge Richard Tucker, a well known and highly esteemed citizen of Barry county. To this union two sons and one daughter are living to mourn the passing of a good mother who are: Wm. and Jas. Tucker of Golden and Mrs. Dove Lee of Willeteka, Okla., who were at her death at her home near Golden, Friday, August 1, 1919. She was the sister of Clint and Wm. Lewis of Clifty, Ark., Mrs. Jas Tucker of Urbanette, Ark. and Mrs. Helen Trammell of Lincoln Ark. She was a woman of high character, imbued with the spirit of right and always practiced it. As evidence of her goodness of heart when the awful tornado visited Golden and vicinity, killed several neighbors, wounded several and destroyed their homes she gave each family $10 in cash. She had been a member of the Christian church since girlhood and was a consistent member. Rev. Mack Haggerty conducted services at Viney cemetery on the 2nd, where the remains were laid to rest beside her husband. Her loved ones should follow in her footsteps because she lived an exemplary life that will be worth their while to follow. - Her Obit has the birth year as 1844, stone reads 1841. | Online Obit Headstone Darla Ball Marbut Photo Jack Fly |

Married Martha Lewis June 20, 1861 by James Lee. - Cassville Democrat, December 9, 1905 - Judge Richard Tucker Passes Away - It is with a sad heart that we chronicle the death of Judge Richard Tucker, at his home near Golden, Monday, Nov. 6, 1905, after a lingering illness of about two years, age 65, 9 months, and 19 days. He was born in Bond County, IL, Jan. 18th, 1842, and went to Madison County, AR, in 1851, to Barry County in 1852, with his parents, and settled in Roaring River Township, where he grew to manhood. At the commencement of the war he enlisted and served under the late Col. R. W. Ryan, whom he always held in the highest esteem, and was mustered out of service in 1864 in St. Louis. He served as Constable of Roaring River township from 1866 to 1870, and was deputy sheriff under the late Capt. John H. Moore. He was elected Associate County Judge from the Eastern district three times and served the people well. In 1861, he married Miss Lewis to whom were born three children. They are: Wm. and Jas. Tucker of Golden and a daughter Mrs. Lee of Oklahoma. In the death of Dick Tucker, Barry County has lost a citizen that will long be remembered by our people. He was a man of firm convictions, stood by what he believed to be right. There was a speck of hypocrisy about him, and if he was your friend you knew it. He had the full confidence and respect of all his acquaintances. He was ever ready to assist those in needy circumstances and never turned them away. He was a splendid husband and an indulgent father. Politically he was a Republican. A member of the Mason, I.O.O.F., and G. A. R. Many years ago he moved to Kansas and remained about one year and then moved back to near Golden. He was a man of remarkable ability, never having the school advantages, in his early life. Had the citizens of Cassville known of his death many would have attended the funeral. - Cassville Democrat, November 11, 1905 - County Court Proceedings - The court being informed of the death of Richard Tucker, a former member of this court, it was ordered by the court that a page for the record be set apart to his memory, and that the clerk prepare same; it is further ordered by the court that this court adjourn for one day out of the respect for the late Judge Tucker. - Bio of father James Tucker | Online Newspapers Phyllis Long Online Obit Headstone Darla Ball Marbut Photo Jack Fly |
