Dec. 10, 1918 Barry Co., MO |
Inscription: "Wife of Samuel S. Barrick" - Research Note: Death Certificate indexed as Kate Barrick. Daughter of George James born VA, mother not known. L. Hill of Shell Knob, MO was the informant. Cause of death: Burned to death in home. Catherine James married Samuel Barrick on Mar. 3, 1866 in Crawford Co., IL. - Cassville Republican, Thursday, Dec. 19, 1918 - Burned To Death: Mrs. Kate Barrick was burned to death in her home near Shell Knob on the night of December 9. Mrs. Barrick was a very old woman. She had lived alone for many years. Old settlers in the eastern part of the county say that she has lived since the Civil War alone in the little house in which she was burned to death. The house had a fire place. It is thought that Mrs. Barrick's clothes caught fire and that she burned to death near the fire place as bones were found near it. The little house and all of its contents were destroyed. During her old age Mrs. Barrick had been cared for by the Hill family who had looked after her as if she were a member of the family. She is said to have been very queer and insisted upon being alone. - Same Paper: Kate Barrick was burned to death in her home on December 9. She lived alone and had for many years. She was very old. Justice of the Peace G. W. Wills summoned a jury and an investigation was made. The jury decided that Mrs. Barrick must have gotten up on the night of the 9th either to build up the fire or to smoke when the fire started which burned her house and herself. Her bones found near the fire place indicated that her clothing caught fire and that she burned to death before the house caught. Mrs. Barrick was a very queer woman. Mr. Hill and son had looked after he during her old age. - Another Photo | Headstone Darla Ball Marbut Death Certificate Online Newspapers IL Marriage Index Phyllis Long Photo Jack Fly |

He died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Carrie McCandless, south of Cassville, on March 16, 1934, at the age of eight-five years, two months and twenty-one days. He was united in marriage to Eliza Ellen Rardin, on March 9, 1871. To this union eight children were born. Three of the children and his wife preceded him in death. Those living are Johnnie of Boise, Idaho; Joe of Golden, MO; Mrs. Minnie Wallace and Cora Wolfinbarger of Ontario, Calif., and Mrs. Carrie McCandless of Cassville. He had made his home with Mrs. McCandless for the past several years. Beside the children living, he is survived by a number of grandchildren and other relatives and friends. Funeral services were at ten o'clock Saturday morning, March 17 at the Horine Funeral Home in Cassville, by Chas. Vanzandt. Burial was in the Viney cemetery near Golden, under the direction of Horine-Culver Funeral Service. This excellent character had lived a great part of his life in this county and was a man whose word was his bond and had many friends. He lived in the Golden country many years coming to his splendid daughter's home after the passing of his good wife. "Uncle Bill" as he was familiarly known, was loved by all who knew him. It was the writer's good fortune to have been intimately acquainted with him for many years and well loved and respected him. He was an intimate friend of Charles Ray, deceased editor of this paper, as well as his father, the late Dr. Jim Ray, founder of the Democrat, and had been a subscriber to this paper since it's establishment in 1872. We extend sympathy to the bereaved relatives of this good man. - Cassville Democrat, May 22, 1920 - Golden: Uncle Wm.
