SSW: John Etta (Mother) - Inscription: "J. T., son of W. R. and J. E. Thompson" - Research Note: Son of William R. Thompson of Washburn Prairie, of lung trouble, aged 22 years and 2 days. Trudy, as he was familiarly called, had been in declining health for several months, and had gone to New Mexico to see if that climate would not give him relief. But in vain, health gone, his condition greatly weakened, his father was notified of his changed condition and went after him and returned home just a few days before he passed away. His greatest desire was to get home, as he knew death was near, so that he might die at home. Rev. Pyke of the M.E. Church, South, conducted funeral services at the Truelove Cemetery Sunday afternoon, before a large crowd of sorrowing relatives and friends who had known Trudy from childhood. It is especially hard to give up an only son, yet a pleasure to know that they can mingle together in a better world. - Another Photo - Another Photo | Note Susan Reed-Tortorelli Online Obit Phyllis Long Photo Fred and Neoma Sherman |

When a small child his parents moved to this county and located near Washburn. He lived in this county until about twenty years ago when he moved to Texas where he has since lived. WHITT, Jonas James | May 20, 1838 | Jan. 28, 1900 | SSW: Melvin - Research Note: He was the son of Griffith Whitt and Martha Skaggs. He first married Frances Cresswell and second Phoebe Ellen Fields. Phoebe was the daughter of Chambers Fields and Eleanor Amick. Chambers is buried at Truelove Cemetery. - Whitt Family History: "Jonas Whitt was born in either Tazwell or Russell Counties on August 17, 1837. Griffith and Martha, his parents, lived in Russell County where they were married. Whether they went back to the Whitts in Tazwell or stayed in Russell County with the Skaggs, is not known. It would seem that they lived near the Whitts, especially James and Nancy (Martha's sister) (Skaggs) Whitt, as she left everything to Jonas, her nephew, when she died, (she and James never having any children of their own). Griffith and Martha left Virginia and headed west around 1840, settling in Grundy County, Missouri. After his Uncle James died, Aunt Nancy wrote her sister and brother-in-law, Martha and Griffith, asking them to let Jonas come back to Virginia and run her plantation. Without hesitation, Jonas headed back to his birthplace, leaving behind ten brothers and sisters, who were jealous and disappointed that they had not been chosen. This caused a permanent break in the family, which was never healed. Jonas was only in Virginia a few years, when the Civil War broke out. he naturally joined the South. What he never knew, was that his brothers were all on the North's side, not by choice but because the Northern soldiers had caught them as they were trying to find a Southern unit and made them join their ranks. This may explain why five of the seven boys died in 1862. Maybe they couldn't bring themselves to return fire on their former county-men. What a blessing that Griffith and Martha had already passed away and didn't have to go through the heartbreak of losing all these sons in the same year. Jonas married Miss Fannie Criswell, while in Virginia and they had two children. After the war he still had quite a lot of money, but it was all in Confederate currency, and useless. Having lost the plantation, because he couldn't pay the property taxes, he loaded his family and headed West, this time to Kansas. He must have felt it was the end of the world when he lost Fannie, to unknown causes. He had no home, no wife and two small children to raise alone. Sometime later he met and married Phoebe Ellen "Gran" Fields, in Burlington, Kansas. Eventually he found himself back in Missouri. However, he did not go back to where his parents were and never saw his family again. Mattie Lee Cooper Whitt (his daughter-in-law) said she never knew a kinder or sweeter man but he was always sad. He and Chambers Fields (Gran's father) used to sit on the front porch everyday, rain or shine and relive the days of the Civil War, each having fought on different sides". | Census Phyllis Long Photo Fred and Neoma Sherman |
