SSW: John and Children - Bill, Annie, Liddie - Research Note: Notes from Gerard Doneski/Doniecki: I believe that the listing for Helen Strick of Capps Creek, Barry County may have errors. Her place of birth has been listed in census records as Germany, France and Poland. I believe that France is pure fiction. Germany would technically be correct as the area of her birth (West Prussia) was occupied by Germany. Based on a family tree compiled by a Frank Strick, Helen's maiden name was Doniecki, not Golkoski. According to my records Helen was born Helene Doniecka on August 17, 1864, her parents were August Doniecki and Anna Sliwinska. She was the 8th of 9 children. She married John Stryk (aka Strick) at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church in Chicago on May 28, 1885. The date of arrival in Barry County is unknown. I suspect that her husband's surname was anglicized (as were many European names) from the Polish Strykowski to Stryk and finally Strick. - Helen Strick (Golkoski or Doniecki) was widowed and her husband's name was John. Her parents were unknown to the informant. She was found dead in bed on Thursday morning. Walter Strick of Kansas City, MO was the informant. The cause of death was Chr. URADZINSKI, Julianna (JANKOWSKA) (MARCHLEWSKI/MOLOSKI) | June 16, 1858 Germany |
Dec. 26, 1923 Capps Creek Twp., Barry Co., MO |
Research Note: The death certificate is indexed as Uradzieuski on the Missouri Archives web site and has June 18, 1856 for the birth date. She was the wife of Adam Uradzinski. Parents were unknown by the informant. Julianna was first married to Johann/John Marchlewski/Moloski. Johann died in 1885 and is buried at St. Mary's Cemetery, Pierce City, MO. - These are notes that are at findgrave.com: Born in the town of Katlewo, north of Lidzbark, Poland, Johann (John) attended church in the nearby town of Nowe Grodziczno. In December, 1882, he boarded the steamship SS Geneva at Hamburg with his older brother Franciszek (Franz), sailing first to Glasgow, then to New York. Franz went south to Plymouth, in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania and became a coal miner. John went west, arriving in St. Louis and staying in the east northeast wharf and river area. There, he began working as a hotel clerk, and soon met a small, very pretty Polish girl with Hungarian roots: Julianna Jankowska. She had arrived in St. Louis in 1881 via Krakow and New York with her mother, half-brother and stepfather. Julianna and John worked seasonally in Pierce City, Missouri at the New Windsor Hotel, a newly built hotel with 70 guest rooms, salesman's rooms and retail space, he a clerk and she as a cook. They married six months later in Pierce City on July 8, 1883. Their first born son John would arrive in May of the following year (1884), born in Pierce City. The following year, as usual, they returned to Pierce City in the spring. They attended the annual 4th of July picnic in Pierce City with their toddler son, but John became ill soon after, complaining of diarrhea. That was followed by an intestinal obstruction, and he died July 13th of its effects (Phyllis' note: Information must be incorrect as John is in the 1900 census, born May 1884). Unknown to he or Julianna at the moment was that Julianna was a couple weeks pregnant with their 2nd child Joseph, who would be born 7 months later in February, 1886.
It is believed that John died at the Windsor Hotel. He was attended by undertaker C. A . Raupp, also known as the owner of the lime kilns and furniture maker; he built many pine boxes for poorer burials. He was interred in the German Catholic Cemetery, later renamed St. Mary's, in an unmarked grave at the rear of the cemetery in the poor section. His grandchildren provided that they visited his grave and that it was located in the edge of the cemetery's access road, beneath a large tree, in the bend of the curve as the road turned from south to east, just west of the Devoted Altar. The tree was removed in the 1970's, and the road was paved shortly after. Evidence of the tree remains, and the road has somewhat encroached on his resting place. St. Mary's has thus far declined the allowance of a marker in light of the lack of documentation for his interment. The effort continues to mark his grave. - 1900 Census Missouri; Barry; Capps Creek; District 3 Adam Uradzinski, head, born Dec. 1856 Poland, age 43, married 10 years, parents born Poland, immigrated to US in 1886 farmer Julia, wife, born June 1857 Germany, age 42, married 10 years, mother of 8 children, 2 living, parents born Germany, immigrated to US in 1881 Joseph Marchlewski, stepson, born Feb. 1887 MO, age 13 John Marchlewski, stepson, born May 1884 MO, age 16 - Notes for Julianna Uradzinski |
