Is it worth the effort to again be with your mother, whom you lived and cherished, in that happy land, far, far away, where saints eternally dwell. If you loved her you will evidently make the effort to meet her in that land of pure delight. Miss Mary Brown was born in Barry County, Jan. 25, 1853, and was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Abe Brown, who lived in McDonald township. She dropped dead at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Bell Robberson in McDowell, where she has gone to get some drinking water, at about 6 p.m., Sunday, evening June 24, age 64 years and 5 months. She was converted at the age of 26 years and united with the Christian Church and had lived a zealous and Christian life all these years. This is a splendid example for her loved ones left on earth to follow in order to secure passage to that Heavenly city, where she is now abiding. In her early life she and Houston Jackson were married and five children were born of this marriage, who are: Mrs. Lou Griffith, Cassville; Edward and John Jackson, McDowell; Frank Jackson, Fairview; and Mrs. Mollie Henley, Newton, Kans. Mr. Jackson died about 1880. In 1884, she and Joseph Mathis were married and the following children were born of this marriage: Jas. Matthis and Mrs. Noah Williams, Kansas City; Mrs. Belle Robberson; Chas. and Claud Matthis of McDowell. Mrs. Hutchens had a short service at the family home and then the remains were conveyed to the Sparks School house where Rev. Francis Goodnight delivered a good funeral sermon, pointing the way to the loved ones left on earth to reserve in order to meet their mother in that Holy City. There was a large crowd of sorrowing relatives and neighbors present, attesting to the splendid qualities of the descendant and the high respect and esteem in whish she was held. Her sister, Mrs. Belle Hudson of Everton, aged 79 years, attended the funeral. She is the last one of the family. Mrs. Matthis was a half sister of the late D. P. Jan. 15, 1910 Barry Co., MO |
Research Note: Father of Esther Jane (McMillan) Writer. Son of Samuel McMillan and Edith. Husband of Esther Suter. Esther may have died in 1901 in NJ. - Article published in The Scottish American History Club Newsletter - The Western British American, a newspaper once published in Chicago reported on April 16, 1898, that Peter MacMillan was visiting Chicago. Capt. MacMillan, the story says, is a Scotchman, 73 years of age who has given his life to mechanical work. MacMillan had joined the British Navy when he was 17 and spent ten years at different posts around the world. When Sumpter was fired on he was working in a machine shop in Edinburgh. He threw up his position and started at once for the United States, where he obtained a position in the navy yard at Philadelphia. It was under his direction that the first ironclad in the United States Navy was fitted out. - Mexico Ledger, Mexico, MO, Feb. 14, 1907 - MISSOURI MAN AFTER $5,000,000 - Capt. Peter McMillan, of Pierce City Wishes Damages from Patent He Alleges is His - Capt. Peter McMillan, aged 83, of Pierce City, MO, is in Washington, and has introduced in Congress through Representative Cassius Shartel a bill whereby he hopes to recover at least $5,000,000 from what he claims is an infringement on his patent dovetailed kept for the assembly of armor plate. The secretary of the treasury is asked to pay him this sum. Believing that all war vessels built in the last nine years for the United States, Russia, and Japan bear his patent illegally on their turrets or elsewhere Capt. McMillan intends to sue the United States Steel corporation wherein Carnegie is a prominent figure; Schwab's Bethlehem Steel company, the Union Iron Works of San Francisco, the Newport Shipbuilding company, the Wm. H. Cramp and Sons Shipbuilding company of Philadelphia, and the New York Shipbuilding company of Camden, NJ. While the total sum involved in the proposed suite would amount to some $200,000,000, the captain would be satisfied to retire from the fray with $5,000,000. The chief of the bureau of ordinance in a letter to Capt. McMillan contends that dovetail keys at the joints of armor plates were known before he secured his patent in 1897. - Cassville Republican, Sept. 12, 1907 - Capt. Peter McMillan left Sunday for Cassville for a short period of rest and quiet. Capt. McMillan has been in poor health for some time and said he wanted to get to the hills and have some rest before renewing his fight with Uncle Sam. Pierce City Leader - Cassville Republican, Jan. 27, 1910 - Capt. Peter McMillan passed from This life Jan. 15, 1910 at the home of his daughter Mrs. Charles M. Writer at Cross Hollows, near Cassville. Mr. McMillan was about 86 years of age. He was a consistent member of the Presbyterian church and his neighbors say of him that he was a noble character and one of the county's representative citizens.
