His death certificate reads that his wife was Edith L. (Parker) Becker. O. A., Julia, Edith, and Jessie are all in the same plot and have matching stones. Married 4 times. His wives were Vena Morgan, Julia (Prunkard) Coates, Mary Elizabeth (Cordell) (Moore) Arnold, and Edith L. Parker. - Posted by Linda Skelton Corbin: Moonshine, Guns, and Human Bones I was looking at the research notes for Ozro A. Arnold in Seligman Cemetery on MoBarry today. (They are always so helpful.) Anyway, I noticed that his 3rd wife (of 4) is not noted. Mary Elizabeth Cordell Moore Arnold, 1881 Tazewell County, Virginia - 1930 Topeka, Kansas. This is a synopsis of many (sometimes conflicting) newspaper articles about them. O. A.(Ozro) Arnold and Mary Cordell received a license to wed in mid-March 1921 in Barry County, MO. Later reports indicate that they were married in April. On July 30, 1921 in the White River hills 4 miles south of Clantonville, Benton County, AR, a big family ruckus occurred. O. A. Arnold had a copper-still by a spring about 200 yards from the house. He had a 50 gallon barrel of mash and was manufacturing moonshine. Mary objected to his moonshining and threatened to report him to the authorities if he didn't cease. An ugly argument occurred. O. A. shot at his wife which resulted in a minor wound on her leg. Mary may have shot a gun before or after O. A. shot. Hostilities continued and a bit later (George) Grant Moore, Mary's 17-year-old son by a former marriage, shot a shotgun from a distance at his step-father, wounding him in the head which resulted in loss of vision in one eye. O. A. walked a mile and crawled a hundred yards to a neighbor's home. The neighbor telephoned O. A.'s friends who came and picked him up and took him to his mothers house in Seligman, MO for medical attention. At first Mary and her son Grant Moore were arrested. Then O. A. Arnold was arrested. There were one or two grand jury hearings. The hearings were very popular as entertainment with the folks in Rollers Ridge Township. Newspapers indicate that Mary's 15 year old twins(girl and boy) were at the hearings. Mary Arnold was not indicted and the charges against Grant Moore were later dismissed. O. A. was tried in October for assault with intent to kill, resulting in a hung jury. He was due to be tried again in the Spring, but there the newspapers go silent on that matter. Evidently, the farm that this event occurred on belonged to Mary Cordell Moore Arnold. In September or October 1921, a quantity of human bones were discovered on that farm. The claim was made that they were the bones of a certain Canadian soldier(M. R. Allen Bean) who had visited the farm in 1919 and had been missing since. The coroner obtained (from Mary?) an address for the soldier in Maine, USA and wrote him a letter. To the coroner's surprise, he received a reply from Allen Bean. Bean stated that he had never been to the farm near Garfield, Arkansas, but he had met Mary Cordell in Seligman, Missouri. Bean stated that he was not now, nor ever had been missing, and his friendship with Mary Cordell was no ones business. - Osroe Arnold, age 24, first married Vena Morgan, age 22, on Dec. 8, 1900 in Cassville, Barry Co., MO. - December 4, 1909, Saturday, Cassville Democrat - Marriage License: O. Mar. 5, 1970 | SSW: Louis - Research Note: No death date on the stone. Not buried here. She is buried at Vineland Cemetery, Clarkston, Asotin Co., WA with her son William and wife. Daughter of Hermanus/Herman Martin Kroeze and Dina Hendrika Van Zuilekom. - These notes are from Findagrave.com - "Father's Story" - Hermannus was born at home in the village of Lonneker, Province of Overijssel in the Netherlands on Wednesday, September 25, 1839 at 10 o'clock in the morning to Joachim Bernardus Kroese (also called Bernardus Joachim Kruse) and Dina Bos (also called Diena Bosch). He was the fifth born of 12 known children. At the age of 18, Hermannus, living in Borne with an occupation of servant/laborer/journeyman, registered with the National Militia on April 30, 1858. He was released from service on April 29, 1863. On October 16, 1867 Hermannus, 28, and Dina Hendrika van Zuilekum/Zuilekom, 24, registered their intent to marry. Both resided in Borne, Overijssel, Netherlands, which is about 16 to 19 km from Lonneker. A little over a month later, they were married on Thursday, November 28, 1867 in Borne. The newlyweds lived in Almelo, Overijssel, Netherlands "in the house standing in district three". Hermanus was employed as a weaver. Beginning in latter part of the 19th century, Almelo employed many in the textile industry. Their oldest daughter, Berendina was born in Almelo on May 14, 1868. She died there at age 2 months and 27 days on August 10, 1868. Their second daughter, Berendina "Dina" Hendrika also called "Della", was born on November 21, 1869 in Almelo. Their third daughter, Janna "Anna" Kroeze was born January 7, 1872 in Borne, Overijssel, Netherlands. On May 16, 1874 the Kroeze family (Hermanus, wife Dina, daughters Dina, age 4, and Janna, age 2) left Rotterdam, Netherlands on the W A Scholten and arrived in the Port of New York on June 1, 1874. They first lived in Holland, Nebraska, near Firth. A baby boy named Ben (born about 1874) is buried there. They may have lived in a cave for a period while in Nebraska. Two sons, Ben and John were born in Holland, Nebraska (1876 and 1878). In the spring of 1879 the family moved from Nebraska to Kansas. From March 26, 1879 to about June 1, 1879 the family lived in a wagon while building their sod house. The sod house was about 12 x 32 ft. They also built a horse and cow stable, hog pens and dug a well. Children Martha, Ella and Henry were born in Luctor, Phillips County, Kansas. Hermanus was one of the original members of the Luctor Christian Reformed Church in Luctor, Phillips County, Kansas and was an active member of the church. He died from complications due to asthma on Tuesday, November 15, 1910, aged 71 years, 1 month and 21 days. - Phillipsburg News Dispatch, Phillipsburg, Phillips, KS, Thursday, Dec. 1, 1910 - Last week Tuesday evening died at Luctor, Hermanus Kroeze. Mr. Kroeze was one of the earliest settlers; he came from Holland in 1877 with a few other Hollanders and settled north of Luctor. Since then he has been farming in the same vicinity, but the last five years he retired and lived on a small home near Luctor. He was sick only a few days of asthma; he leaves a wife and six married children. His two sons who reside in Wyoming came to attend the funeral and also his other children who all live in Kansas. The funeral was conducted by Rev. Kuiper; the sermon was pronounced by Rev. Van Dellen who was here on a visit from Denver and Rev. Deelsnyder also spoke a few words in memorial of the deceased. - The Logan Republican and Prairie View News, Logan, Phillips, KS, Nov. 24, 1910 - H. Kroeze was born in Holland, Sept. 25, 1839, and died Nov. 15, 1910, aged 71 years, 1 month and 21 days. He was married to Miss Dinah Van Lekon, Nov. 28, 1867, and to this union 9 children were born, 6 of whom are still living. In 1874 he moved from Holland, Europe to Holland, Nebr., and in 1879 came to Phillips county Kansas and located on a homestead near Luctor. The funeral services were held at the church last Thursday by Rev. Kuiper and the body interred in the Luctor cemetery. A large concourse of friends and relatives were present and showed their respect and esteem for this good man. Mr. Kroeze was a good friend and neighbor and lived a consistent Christian life. His place will be missed in our community. - "Mother's Story" - Dina Hendrika van Zuilekom was born in Laren, Gelderland, Netherlands on Saturday, February 25, 1843 to Garret Willem van Zuilekum/Zuilekom and Janna Schutte. Dina had a little brother who was still born on May 21, 1847. A story that has been passed down is that Dina Hendrika, as a child or young person, was given an award or medal from the queen of Holland. The queen during this time frame would have been Queen Sophie wife of King William III who reigned from March 17, 1849 – November 23, 1890. Queen Sophie died on June 3, 1877. Dina married Hermanus Martin Kroeze on Thursday, November 28, 1867 in Borne, Overijssel, Netherlands. The newlyweds lived in Almelo, Overijssel, Netherlands "in the house standing in district three". Hermannus was employed as a weaver. Beginning in latter part of the 19th century, Almelo employed many in the textile industry. Their oldest daughter, Berendina was born in Almelo on May 14, 1868. Dina died in Prairie View, Phillips County, Kansas on Wednesday, October 13, 1915 at the age of 72. On February 14, 1989, Dina's grandson Harold described his memories of going to Phillips County, Kansas after the death his Grandma Kroeze when Harold was four years and 10 months old. He and his mother Ella took the train from Western Kansas. He recalled being at Aunt Martha's house early in the morning and asking to see Grandma Kroeze. She wasn't in a casket yet, but on a couch without a back. Aunt Martha pulled a sheet off of Grandma Kroeze's face and he remembered his mother Ella reaching down and giving Dina a love pat and he saw his mother lift her apron to wipe tears from her eyes. This was his only memory of his Grandma Kroeze, but he believes he probably had seen her before this. | Photo Deceased Beverly Sweeney Census Cemetery Records Notes Phyllis Long |

Her parents were given as James Walker and Margaret Johnson and were both born in Scotland. Cause of death stated as burned to death. Lillie S. King of Seligman gave the information. - March 31, 1910, Thursday, Cassville Republican - Mrs. Margaret Dobbie of Butter Hollow, southeast of Seligman, met a horrible death Thursday, Mary 24. She was born June 1858 at Sterlingshire, Scotland and was married 1897 to James Dobbie at Clydebank, Scotland, came to this country May 1903. Died March 24, 1910, age 51. She attempted to put fire out that was burning near the house when her clothes caught on the wire fencing and she attempted to free herself. The fire reached her quickly and she burned to death - The Springdale News from The Eureka Springs Flashlight, April 8, 1910 - Mrs. J. Dobbie living between Beaver and Seligman, was burned to death yesterday while fighting fire at her home. The details are meager but the supposition is that Mrs. Dobbie was working against the forest fires that have swept so much of the adjacent territory and that her clothing caught on fire. Mr. Dobbie is a stone mason and was absent from home, at work at his trade, and his wife and daughter were alone at the home. Their place is the one along the Missouri and North Arkansas road, having rock walls for fences, stone stable partly completed. The sad accident occurred yesterday and the sufferer lingered several hours before death relieved her. It is one of the saddest tragedies that ever occurred in the neighborhood and the tenderest sympathy is extended the bereaved. - | Death Certificate Donna Cooper Photo Deceased Beverly Sweeney Obits Phyllis Long |
