Elijah Burton Utter

This is Elijah Burton Utter and his second wife Mary Magdalene (Earlywine) Utter.

Elijah Burton "E. B." was the Probate Judge in Barry county during the years of 1890-1894. They lived southeast of Butterfield near Russell cemetery and Shady Grove School.

Elijah and his first wife, Mary Jane Russell, brought a wagon train from Indiana in the 1860's. Mary Jane died in northeast Arkansas from "the fever" which prompted the wagon train to come back into Missouri. After a short few years near Newtonia, MO, they came to Barry county where E. B. married Miss Earlywine and they lived out their remaining years.

Mary Jane's family which had made the journey to Arkansas and Missouri with with them, donated the land for Russell cemetery.

"Judge" Utter, as he was known, died July 1st, 1902, and is buried along with several of his family members at Russell Cemetery. Elijah is my great great grandfather's (David Jefferson Utter) older brother.
