SHIPLEY, John Hunt | Sept. 12, 1829 Sullivan Co., TN |
Oct. 12, 1864 McDonald Co., MO |
Research Note: Contrary to the notes below, John Hunt Shipley is most likely buried on the Shipley Family Farm Cemetery. It was brought to my attention that it is listed on Findagrave.com with a photo of the stone. - Agnes Lawson's note: Harriet Jane Varner's first husband. Son of Orson Shipley and Hannah Hunt. Agnes Lawson's family history states that "John Shipley was killed at Twelve Corners in the Battle of Pea Ridge. Hattie slipped in after dark on her horse and took the body of John and then with Aunt Nerva Roller, George C. Laughlin's sister, they went to Roller Cemetery and buried his body there after dark." - Doyle Laughlin's note: John Shipley and Harriet Jane Varner Shipley came from east Tennessee in a covered wagon drawn by oxen. The wheels slowly rolled to the west for almost two months, a distance of between 600 and 700 miles. They crossed the Mississippi River on a ferry boat. Several families were in the party. When Saturday came, the party always camped until the following Monday. They kept the Sabbath holy. John Shipley was a Methodist minister. The Shipley family settled on Trents Creek. - Cleva Bynum Bouvier's note: Bushwhackers claimed they wanted John Shipley to show them the way to Arkansas. Evidently he tried to escape and they shot him. Later the bushwhackers came back to the door and asked Harriet where her husband was. Harriet was rather spunky so she said "You know where he is. He's right out there under the tree. You killed him." They acted innocent and demanded to come in to make sure he was not there. Its a wonder they didn't kill her. One of them climbed the ladder to the loft with his gun and found Rena whom Harriet had sent to the loft to get some canned fruit. When they found only Rena was there, they left. | Notes Census Phyllis Long |

Apr. 7, 1909 McDonald Co., MO |

His second wife was Harriet Jane Varner, married in May 1882 in Barry Co., MO. - April 10, 1909, Cassville Democrat - Mayflower News: Dick Shipley, of McDonald County, age 86 years, cut his throat Monday morning, April ?, at 6 o'clock. No one knew the cause of him doing the deed only loss of mind; the remains were taken to the Roller Cemetery. - The Families of James Shelton of McMinn County, Tennessee and His Father Roderick Shelton of Buncombe County, North Carolina and Their Antecedents by Arthur Paul Shelton, August 1987 - Letter from Dick Shipley to John E. Shelton - Catherine Shelton, twelfth and last of James and Sara Shelton’s children, was born July 20, 1842, there having been a span of six years between children here and Sarah now being 47 years old. Catherine married Richard N. (Dick) Shipley September 17, 1857. In 1872 James deeded them 118 acres in Newton, County, Missouri. There is at hand a letter from Dick Shipley to his brother-in-law, John E. Shelton. This is a nice newsy letter. Part of it is missing. The portion at hand is here quoted: Newton County, Missouri, October 27, 1873. Dear Brother John. I take my pen in hand to write you a letter in answer to yours of September 2 which was received in due time. We were glad to hear from you once more but were sorry to hear your health is not very good (John died two year later.) In the first place I will ask you to excuse us for not writing sooner and will say to you that we are all well except the little girls have whooping cough, though they are not very bad off. I have nothing much of interest to write you at present. You complain of hard times in your country. I would say to you that hard times have found their way here too. Crop on an average is very light. Wheat and oats crops were ordinary. Corn crop is tolerable good in places while in other places there is an almost entire failure. So on the whole there is not more than half a crop, the money is so scarce that corn is not selling very high. It can be bought now at thirty-five or forty cents. The prospect is that it will run up to a pretty high figure before spring. It may be of interest to you to know what our prospects are for a living here. I would say that we are doing the best we can and that is bad enough, though I would say that we have lived so far and lived as well as we ever did in Tennessee. The prospects ahead look very gloomy but maybe the dark clouds will blow over. After which I will give you a short sketch of what we have been doing since we have been out here. When we got here I found myself with sixty dollars in money. So as a matter of course we had to have some little necessities to go in the house and some provisions, the first thing which exhausted my capital. At once winter was on us and nothing could be done out until March to amount to anything. I was not able to make any move to make a garden, so I hired myself out and worked for fifteen dollars per month from March till July. Since then I have been working at anything I could do my best at. So I have made a little money. We had a tolerable good garden. Catherine has sold out of the garden, chickens and butter about forty dollars cash. In the way of stock we now have one cow and calf, one sow and eight fine pigs. I have bought me a good last spring colt and pretty much corn, enough to do me until spring. Catherine and the children have three geese and six ducks. I have three hogs now fat that will make close to one thousand pounds of pork, so we intend to just sop one side of our bread and sell our bacon next summer. I am not able yet to turn a wheel toward improving land. It costs so much here to break the land and fence. I have traded for a little improvement near me which has some little improved land on it ... - It is indicated that Catherine and Dick, partly because of their industry and thrift, perhaps, as indicated in the above letter, were favorites of James. In terms not heretofore found in papers at hand he refers to his affection and love for his daughter Catherine in a deed and for this consideration deeds her the property. There were at least two children. Catherine is named in her father’s will. | Headstone Delta Newby Online Newspapers Census TN Marriage Records MO Marriage Records Book Phyllis Long |

His first wife was Maurine E. Anderson. His second wife was Vera Maurine Carr, buried at Hutchinson, Reno Co., KS. - He worked at various professions in his lifetime from ranch hand, movie extra, radio crooner, government meat inspector during WWII and a licensed electrician. He was very versatile and excelled at anything he tried. In 1935, he married Maurine Anderson and lived with her 53 years until her passing in l988. There were six children from this marriage, one who passed away in infancy. Later in 1988 he married Maurine Wilkerson, a childhood friend who he had reconnected with. They were together for 18 years until her passing in 2006. Since her passing, he has lived in the home they shared with the family of his stepson. - Source for the Summey families from Leo Summey still living in Oct. 2009. Sent to me by his step son Harlan Wilkerson. "Summey" is Leo's adopted name. His real mother is buried in the nearby Mountain Community Cemetery. His real father and adoptive mother (his aunt) are buried in Roller cemetery on the other side of Mary Edith Summey. They are L. W. "Shorty" and Nancy (Hunter) Routh. Leo was born to Sallie (Hunter) Routh and her husband, L. Watt "Shorty" Routh, on a cattle ranch in Harper County Kansas. Shorty and Sallie were originally from Missouri. After Leo was born, the family moved to McDonald County, Mo. to work on a farm that was owned by a brother-in-law, William Summey, and his wife Nancy (Hunter) Summey. Leo's mother died in childbirth when Leo was twenty months old, in 1913. She and the infant were buried in a cemetery on the Summey farm in Mountain, Missouri (aka Frazier or Mountain Community Cemetery). It is just a few miles from the Roller Cemetery, on the old farm place of Ealiny and Eliza (Moore) Summey. BTW, when their son, George R. Summey, passed away in April 2008 he was buried in the old Summey cemetery near Leo's mom. Nancy (Hunter) Summey, and her husband, William Marion Summey never had any children of their own. They wanted to adopt Leo. Shorty agreed, and continued to work on the Summey place, other farms in the area, and on the annual harvests in Kansas and Oklahoma. Mr. Summey died during the Spanish Influenza pandemic in early 1919, and was buried at Twelve Corners Cemetery in Pea Ridge, Arkansas. Leo's dad, Shorty Routh, subsequently married Nancy (Hunter) Summey. They are both buried at Roller cemetery, next to Leo and Maurine (Anderson) Summey's infant daughter Mary Edith. Maurine (Anderson) Summey was born in Colorado and raised just across the border in Kanarado, Kansas. Her parents were Alvin Leonard Anderson and Olive Anderson. Shorty had grown up in a town called "New York, Missouri". His father, Jesse Routh, had immigrated from Ireland as a young man and had become a physician and farmer. Shorty's mother was Martha (Vanderpool) Routh. She was from Washburn Mo. Sallie and Nancy Hunter were from Gum Springs Mo. Sallie was the youngest child of pioneers Elisha and Lucinda (Barker) Hunter. Elisha Hunter's house was designated as the original Cedar County seat of government in June of 1845, pending the establishment of the permanent seat of government. | Headstone Delta Newby Notes Obit Phyllis Long |

My grandmother told me that Robert started life as a two pound baby and grew up to be a 200 pound man. The trauma of seeing her baby burn to death caused Martha to loose her mind.
