When she was a small girl, she moved to MO with her parents. She married G. C. Knisley Nov. 24, 18743. The fifty years they were together were spent in happiness and devotion to one another. At the first of her sickness, he promised her that he would never leave her and he remained by her bedside until the last. The home was blessed with seven children. One, Mazie Bell, passed away in infancy. The other six are Ezra, Lon, Clarence, Lula Laughlin, Kate Coffee, and Edith Laughlin. She leaves one brother, J. C. Shepard, and one sister, Kate Hepler, 26 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, and a host of friends. She joined the Dunkard Church in her early girlhood. A most devoted life was lived by Laura. Her one great wish was that all her children might live a true life and meet her again some day. A few days before her passing, she said she wished that all of them might always attend Sunday School and other church services. Two evenings before her passing she asked that they might have prayer. She said she wasn't at all afraid, but one should talk with their Lord often and there was so much strength in it. In her last few minutes she turned her eyes toward Heaven and lay facing her Father as she left us. | Headstone Donna Cooper MO Marriage Records Obit Phyllis Long |

Laughlin, a prominent farmer of Mountain Township, McDonald County, Missouri, was born in Morgan County, Indiana on August 23, 1838 and passed away on May 8, 1915. In the passing away of Uncle George, as he was best known, the home and county have lost one of its truest and best friends. He was converted early in life and united with the M. E. Church, South, of which he has always lived a devoted life. He came to this county with his parents, Melvin and Lucretia Laughlin, when quite young and has resided here ever since. He was a man of strong faith and broad sympathies and his kindly spirit made everyone his friend. Though gone from our midst a little while, his influence remains and abides with us still. He was a sufferer for many months and was bedfast six weeks. He bore his affliction with the greatest of patience and never murmured. Everything was done that loving hands could do but the Heavenly Master saw fit in His wisdom to call him up higher. He leaves a wife and four children, three sons and one daughter. They are John S., Sidney, G. O. and Mrs. D. L. Patterson of Joplin. These with his many relatives and friends, he leaves sweet memories of his life. He was 77 years old. Funeral Services were conducted at the M.E. Church, after which the body was laid to rest in the Roller Cemetery. - Goodspeed's 1888 History of McDonald Co., MO - George C. Laughlin a prominent farmer of Mountain Twp., McDonald Co., MO, was born in Morgan Co., IN on Aug. 23, 1838. His father, Melvin A. Laughlin came to McDonald Co. about 1839, and located on Big Sugar Creek, at the mouth of Trent Creek. The latter and family first lived in a tent, among thousands of wild animals, snakes and Indians. George C. Laughlin secured a limited education in the subscription schools held in the rude log cabin school buildings of those early days. During the Civil War he served seven months in the Confederate army, as a member of Capt. Clanton's company, in Gen. Greene's regiment. On June 16, 1861, he was united in marriage with Jane E., a daughter of John P. Hall (deceased). Mrs. Laughlin died on Jan. 30, 1868, leaving two children, Lois E. and Sidney. Lois married Harvey Lawson, of McDonald Co., and has two children, Jane and an infant daughter. Sidney married Rebecca J. Clanton, by whom he is the father of one child, Theodore. On Mar. 12, 1869, Mr. Laughlin married again, choosing for his second wife Rachel C. Shipley, a daughter of John Shipley, and to them have been born four children, of whom one, Leonidas, is deceased. Those living are Rosa L., John S., and George O. Rosa married Roy Harper, of Center Twp., McDonald Co. Mr Laughlin is the owner of 225 acres of land, and devotes his whole attention to agriculture pursuits. He takes little interest in politics, and has never sought official honors. SSW: Delphia A. - Research Note: First wife was Angeline Pendergraft, daughter of Moses and Margaret Pendergraft. His second wife was Delphia Arminda Hall, daughter of John Paten and Louisa Hall. Son of Melvin A. Laughlin and Lucretia Jane Gallaway. - Goodspeed's 1888 History of McDonald Co. MO - Judge Harvey J. Laughlin, Judge of the eastern district of McDonald County, Mo., was born in Morgan County, Indiana, on Aug. 1, 1836. He is a son of Melvin A. Laughlin, who immigrated with his family, in the spring of 1839, to McDonald County, Mo. He settled on Big Sugar Creek, at the mouth of Trent Creek. The country was unsettled, and was full of Indians and wild animals, which made the nights hideous with their cries. Mr. Laughlin had to shut up his hogs at night to keep the bears from killing them. The subject of this sketch attended the first school in this settlement, and has a vivid recollection of the pioneer school house with its primitive furniture. the first teacher knew nothing whatever about arithmetic, and only reading, spelling and writing were taught. He also remembers when their lumber was sawed with a whip-saw, and their wheat was cut with a hand sickle. When the first cradle made its appearance, the settlers thought it a wonderful invention. The wheat was either tramped out by horses or beat out with flails, and cleaned by hand. Wild meat was the chief meat of these sturdy pioneers. Wild honey was also in abundance, and, besides being used for food, was used for soap by some of the settlers. In March 1855, Mr. Laughlin was united in marriage with Angeline Pendergraft, a daughter of Moses Pendergraft, an early settler of the county. They were parents of three children, all of whom are now dead. Two of them lived to be grown, Emily C. and Melvin Jonathan. Emily married John Lawson, and left three children: William, Annie and Harvey. Mr. Laughlin's first wife died on Apr. 15, 1859 and he was married again on Dec. 9, 1860 to Delphia A. Hall, a daughter of John Hall. The following children have been born to this union: Johnathan S., Margaret M. J., Harvey A., John M., Lettie A., George Calvin, Sarah A., James F. and Lois V. (twins), Thomas L., and Martha J. S., and eight of them are living. Harvey married Martha Harper, and has two children Myrtie and Arminda. John married Ellen Roller, and has one child, deceased. Lettie married George Lawson, and has one child, Georgia B. Judge Laughlin has served as justice of the peace, and was constable at the breaking out of the Rebellion. He enlisted in the Confederate army, joining Capt. Clanton's company, of Gen. Greene's regiment, and participated in the battles of Pea Ridge and Beaver's Mill. (Harvey is listed on the rolls of Confederate soldiers at the National Monument at Pea Ridge, AR.) He is a consistent member of the Methodist Episcopal Church South and of the Farmer's Alliance. - Wheaton Journal, Jan. 10, 1929 - H. J. Laughlin Dies - H. J. Laughlin, pioneer resident of this community, passed away at the home of his son, T. L. Laughlin, last Thursday night. Uncle Harve was one of our oldest citizens, being 92 years of age. He spent most of his life in McDonald County. He was bedfast for six months but became worse Wednesday when he had a stoke of paralysis. He leaves four sons and three daughters, several grand children and great-great grand children, and a host of friends to mourn his departure. LAUGHLIN, Melvin Amos | Oct. 10, 1810 KY |
July 15, 1863 McDonald Co., MO |
Research Note: Husband of Lucretia Jane Gallaway. Son of John Abe Laughlin and Margaret Duncan. - Goodspeed's 1888 History of McDonald County - Melvin A. Laughlin came to McDonald County about 1839, and located on Big Sugar Creek at the mouth of Trent Creek. He and his family first lived in a tent among thousands of wild animals, snakes and Indians. - The following information was given to Johnie Lawson and Agnes Lawson by Marvin Hall, grandson of Lucretia (Laughlin) Hall. - When the Melvin Laughlin family came from Indiana, they camped where the Roller Churches and Schoolhouse are. He traded a team of oxen and a wagon for a section of land. (On Highway 90 toward Washburn after leaving the Roller Cemetery where September 11, 1984 the 100-year old barn is standing.) Paten Hall lives on the old homestead. John Paten Hall bought the old Laughlin homestead (Melvin's daughter's husband). Melvin Laughlin was killed at Granny's Branch. The Laughlins were in the Confederate Army (Indiana was considered a Southern State and they stayed with their former state). There were about 12,000 Union Soldiers down in the Cyclone area. The Union Scouts located the Confederate soldiers hiding in a cave and a battle ensued. Melvin Laughlin was killed. Aunt Nerva Roller, his daughter, knew where her daddy was at all times. When he didn't show up for two or three days, she went looking for him and found his body. She and some other woman took him to Bentonville Hollow and buried him temporarily in a marked grave. After the war, they moved his remains to Roller Cemetery. Colored people came with the Laughlins and when the slaves were freed, the older couple would not leave. They lived in a cabin on the Laughlin farm until their deaths and were buried in the Roller Cemetery in unmarked graves. The Hall and Laughlin families were intermarried and close friends, but during the war, they were separated because one was Union and the other Confederate. After the war they did not talk about it. Marvin said his granddaddy fought in the battle of Pea Ridge against his own brother-in-law. | Headstone Patricia Scott Headstone Donna Cooper Notes Agnes Lawson Goodspeed Phyllis Long |

May 11, 1919 Pineville, McDonald Co., MO |
Research Note: Second wife of George Clinton Laughlin. Daughter of John H. Shipley and Harriet Jane Varner. - Pineville Democrat May 30, 1919 - Again the death angel has cast its shadowy wings over our community and called from this world of care, Mrs. Rachel Laughlin, to unspeakable joys on high. Aunt Rachel, as she was best known, fell April 15, 1919, and fractured her hipbone of which she suffered intense pain for four weeks. Through these four weeks of pain she never murmured but bore her suffering with the greatest patience. She sweetly fell asleep in Jesus May 11, 1919, on Mother's Day -- the day of all days. She lived a true Christian godly life, always in which she had lived since early girlhood. Her husband, G. C. Laughlin preceded her to the glory world of which she spoke, four years and three days. Look up, dear children, mother can't come to you, but you can go to her and make an unbroken family in heaven, which was her daily and hourly prayer. She was born in East Tennessee in the year 1848 and when but a child came to Missouri where she lived the remainder of her life. To this union four children were born, Mrs. Lee Harper, John S. Laughlin, George O. Laughlin and a baby boy who died in infancy. She professed faith in Christ very early in life and united with the South M. E. Church of which she lived a devoted member and a consecrated life. She will not only be missed by her home, but in the church and Sunday School, but her prayers and influence will live on. She was a fond and loving Mother and a friend to everyone. Besides her children, she leaves 14 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, 3 sisters, one brother and a host of friends and relatives to mourn her departure. Funeral services were conducted at the M. E. Church by Rev. Goodnight of Purdy, after which the body was laid to rest in the Roller Cemetery. | Headstone Donna Cooper Census Phyllis Long |
