HERD, "Eliza" Mary Elizabeth (NEAL) | June 14, 1816 TN |
Oct. 26, 1883 Benton Co., AR |
SSW: William - Inscription: "Wife of William Herd" - Research Note: Notes from ancestry.com, Posted Nov. 30 2017 by carolgca: Like so many other families my family was told throughout the years we had a Native American heritage. Only the female line can carry the DNA markers for our Native American people. Alta Tate, a female descendant line for Eliza, 6/14/1816 - 10/26/1883, wife of William Herd, took a DNA test which showed that Eliza's female line came from middle Europe and migrated to Scotland or there about before coming to North America. After getting her DNA results, Alta remembered that her mother had told her that they were of Scotch-Irish decent. Alta was my 2nd cousin as follows: Alta Tate, her mother, Clara May Masters, her mother, Mary Jane Herd, her mother, Eliza. The Roller family originated in Germany. In 1923, Richard Roy "Curly" Herd, the son of Alfred Burrell "Al" Herd, the son of Eliza and William Herd listed his race as Scottish on his documents for the border crossing from the U.S. to Canada. On his crossing into Canada in 1929, he listed his race as Irish. Richard Roy's brother, Bishop Commadore "Rusty", also crossed the border to Canada and in 1928 and 1929, he listed his race as Irish. I believe that Eliza's family name might have been Neal. She and William had a Jacob Neal living with them in the 1850 Tennessee census and through the 1860 Arkansas census. On the census form Jacob was listed as "simple minded". He was close enough in age to have been Eliza's older brother. William and Eliza named their first-born son Richard Neal Herd. Some people in our family have thought his name may have been Nobel but as yet I have no documentation to whether the name was Neal or Nobel. The Neal families came to America from Ireland and lived in Pennsylvania before moving to Virginia and Tennessee. On the 1880 Arkansas census Eliza stated her father came from Pennsylvania and her mother Virginia. Now I know that throughout the census records people have changed their parents, as well as, their own birth locations but since the 1880 census was the only record we have where Eliza told us where her parents came from, I am going to accept her statement. If any of my extended family have knowledge or documentation of Eliza's possible family, please let me know. I was hoping to find any death certificates of Eliza or her children that listed their mother's maiden name. To date I have not found any. | Retake Photo Donna Cooper Ted Roller ancestry.com Phyllis Long |
