SMITH, Amanda (SLOAN) | Nov. 29, 1837 | Jan. 30, 1914 | Inscription: "Wife of Randolph R. Smith" - Research Note: Note by Freda Hendon: Amanda Sloan was the daughter of James Sloan (Irish) and Margaret Boyd. James Sloan came from Ireland. (Or was it his father who came from Ireland?) Amanda's mother brought her 3 children ? the older boy who was later killed in the Mexican War, a girl who died at the age of 12 or 14, and Amanda ? to Fayetteville, Arkansas to visit her family from her home near the Black River. When the mother Margaret returned to the plantation with her wagon train and slaves, she found that her husband had a housekeeper in place of her. She could not swallow her pride and live with him, so she divorced him and returned to her family near Fayetteville. She later remarried and went to Texas. After a short time she died and Amanda's stepfather sent word to Amanda's uncle Jake Oxford that he must come for her (Amanda, who was about 3 years old at the time.) He came and she rode behind him on a horse to their farm or plantation near Fayetteville on Oxford Bend. Shortly afterwards, her father, James Sloan, a wealthy plantation owner and slave holder who had drained the swamps of the Black River, was shot and killed in those very swamps. It is said he was carrying $30,000 in gold and notes. Amanda later received some inheritance from the sale of the land. Amanda was raised by the Oxfords and it was through them that she met Rand. - Amanda is named on her son's death certificate as Amanda Oxford. | Note Phyllis Long Photo Bill Utter |

SMITH, Rafe C. | July 21, 1855 Washington Co., AR |
Mar. 19, 1908 Fairview, Newton Co., MO |
Inscription: "Age 52 Yrs. 7 Mos. 26 Ds." - Research Note: Cassville Democrat, March 28, 1908 - It is with feelings of deep regret that we chronicle the death of Rafe Smith of Oak Hill, Ark., at the home of his father, Ran (Randolph) R. Smith, near Fairview, Newton County, MO, March 19, of pneumonia, age 53 years, 7 months, and 10 days. He was born July 21, 1854, in Washington Co., Arkansas, and when a young man came to Barry County with his parents and located in Ash township where they resided a number of years; his father afterwards moving to Newton County. He left a wife and eight children to mourn his death. He was a brother of T. H. B. and Bay Smith of this county. The remains were laid to rest in the Rocky Comfort Cemetery at 4 p. m. March 19th, Rafe enjoyed a good reputation and he had the respect and confidence of all his acquaintances. At one time he lived near Eagle Rock. To the relatives we tender our sympathy. - His mother was Amanda Sloan. | Online Obit Phyllis Long Photo Bill Utter |
SMITH, Randolph Ross | Jan. 10, 1832 IL |
July 21, 1909 MO |
Research Note: Husband of Amanda. - Note by Freda Hendon: Randolph Smith, son of Jacob Smith and Glaphrey Matthews (Scotch-Irish-Dutch), was born January 10, 1832 in Illinois, the youngest of 8 children. When he was nearly grown, his father died and the family moved to Fayetteville, Arkansas, where they operated a dry goods store. His uncles were plantation owners in southern Arkansas. On July 30, 1854, he married Amanda Sloan, born November 29, 1836. To them 9 children were born. Until the Civil War they operated a general store on Rollers Ridge near what is now Seligman, Missouri. Then, though all his family were Democrats, he joined the Union army delivering supplies. At the beginning of the War, he took his family to Mount Vernon, Missouri, to be near their relatives. They took a route to miss the Old Wire Road which soon came under the control of Federal troops. After the War Between the States, he again operated the store on Rollers Ridge, the territory around what is now Seligman. Also, about this time there was a period of lawlessness when good citizens had to take the law into their own hands. So Randolph became a member of the Vigilantes. There were many horse thieves and it was the duty of Vigilantes to catch them. One time when he and his second son Charley were at Washburn (Old Washburn), one of those horse thieves, a man by the name of King, started shooting at him. Now, Ran was not one to give up so he began shooting back as fast as Charley could load the gun. Ran, as he was called, was seriously wounded but recovered. His wife Amanda went to Washburn and cared for him until he was able to be moved home. After the Civil War a railroad was built through that section of Missouri and Arkansas and, as a result, Seligman, Missouri, became the trading center. They then settled on a farm on Oliver's Prairie near Fairview, Missouri. To help pay for the farm they spent several years farming the fertile soil of Sugar Creek. Then after the farm was paid for and the family grown, Ran signed a note for $5000 for one of his friends and had to pay it. The boys paid most of it. | Note Phyllis Long Photo Bill Utter |
