PEERSON, Martha Jane (SHERRY) | Apr. 28, 1835 | Feb. 23, 1913 | Inscription: "Wife of D. L. Peerson" - Research Note: Her husband was Daniel Levi Peerson. Daughter of Green William Sherry and Delilah Ingram. Martha was the mother of George M. Peerson who married Emily Metcalf. She is living with them in the 1910 Census, Liberty, Barry, Missouri. - Information for this article was furnished by Mrs. Mildred Gholson Walker of Waco, Texas, a descendant of the early Sherry pioneers. - The Sherrys Come to Arkansas: William Sherry, native of North Carolina, fought in the Revolutionary War. One of his sons, John, married Winnie Horton. John's son, William, married Easter Holcomb. Children of this couple were John, Melinda and Green William Sherry. Our story is about Green William who was born in Warren County, Kentucky in 1813. By 1815, the mother, Easter, was dead, and the family was in Indiana. In 1815 William married again, this time to a widow, Martha (Patsy) Reavis Goodwin, in Gibson County, Indiana. William Sherry died in 1819, leaving his and Easter's three children, a daughter of Patsy's by her former marriage, two of his children by Patsy, and an unborn child. A court appointed Hosea and March Holcomb as guardians of John, Malinda and Green William. From Indiana, Green moved to Illinois, where he married Miss Delilah Ingram in 1834. His brother, John, moved back to Indiana. Green and his new bride then moved to the new Territory of Arkansas, where he homesteaded land in what is now the west side of Springdale, and other farm lands north of West Fork, along what is now the Mineral Springs road. In 1836, Green went to Fort Smith, and was mustered into the Arkansas Volunteers, a detachment destined for Fort Gibson in the Indian Territory to quell any riots incident to the removal of the Cherokees from their eastern lands. After six months he was discharged. Green and Delilah had, in all, thirteen children. Not all of them married in Washington County, but the records on some are available. Martha became the wife of Daniel Peerson; John Calvin married Susan White; Mary Margaret married John Gilbreath. Elizabeth became the bride of William Grigry; Malinda married Richard Towns. William, unmarried, died in Texas. Sarah was the wife of John Lackey, and James married Mrs. Hanna Brewster who was a Strickler. Thomas married Lou Bryant. - Another Photo | Census Note Phyllis Long Photos Bill Utter |
