MAHURIN, Chester | Mar. 14, 1926 McDonald Co., MO |
Aug. 17, 1948 Sale Mem. Hosp., Neosho, Newton Co., MO |
Research Note: He was a truck driver for the lumber mill. Son of Henry Martin Mahurin and Effie (Patton) (Mahurin) Davis. Mrs. Effie Davis, his mother, of Neosho, MO was the informant on the death certificate. An inquest was held and cause of death was a gun shot wound in the left chest with a 410 shot gun at the hands of a person or persons unknown to this Jury. It happened at a filling station. - Chester Mahurin, 22, died in Sale Memorial hospital shortly after 10 Tuesday night, death resulting from a shotgun wound sustained less than an hour before. Newton Co. Sheriff H. G. Cline, Neosho Chief of Police Walter Montgomery, and Coroner Corley Thompson, as well as the highway patrol, are investigating the case, as the death could be suicide, an accident, or the result of foul play. The blast from the 410 shotgun ranged downward through Mahurin's body. A coroner's jury has been called, but no action is to be taken pending further investigation. Gene Mahurin, brother of the dead man, and his wife said that Chester Mahurin drove his car into the filling station driveway and backed it around to the rear of the station operated by them, about 9 Tuesday night. They said that they heard a sound about like a fire cracker, in a short time, and that in a few moments Chester staggered to the door of the station and collapsed. He was rushed to Sale Memorial hospital but never regained consciousness. The Mahurin family lived near the Hemphill station on Hwy 71, some years ago, and the father died there. The family came to Neosho, and Chester lived with his mother, now Mrs. Effie Davis. Other survivors are another brother, John Mahurin of Neosho, and three sisters, Mrs. Mable Ross of Darwin, CA, Mrs. Youngblood of Neosho and Mrs. Wilma Bible of Hood River, OR. Funeral services will be at 2 Friday, tomorrow afternoon, by Rev. G. T. Kelley of Neosho, in the Thompson Funeral Home and burial will be made in the Rocky Comfort cemetery. | Death Certificate Obit Phyllis Long Photo Bill Utter |

SSW: Lenora - Research Note: Son of Thomas J. McClure born Rhea Co., TN and mother's maiden name was Rowland (America L. Roland/Rowland) born Franklin Co., TN. Informant on the death certificate was marked with an X and was from Purdy, MO. - Vivian Roller's Scrapbook: OLD TIME BARRY COUNTY CITIZEN PASSES - Another old time citizen has been called hence, the angel of death summoning him to come and directed his spirit to the land of abode, where it is hoped he may enjoy sweet rest for he has suffered so long in this life. Emmett McClure died Tuesday evening, Sept. 8, 1925, at the old McClure home, 4 1/2 miles southwest out on state highway, near where he was born, of tuberculosis, aged 61 years. His daughter Mrs. Wear Lee and husband and relatives had tenderly nursed him, as well as his neighbors, who had contributed much toward attempting to comfort him, but without avail. He was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thos. J. McClure old and respected citizens of this county. Many years ago, he married a Miss Abernathy, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bud Abernathy, former residents of Exeter and Rocky Comfort and later at Dublin Texas. The husband was a brother of late M. L. Miles and Milton Abernathy, former well known citizens of Barry county. To this union one daughter was born, Miss Nora McClure, who later married Wear Lee, who lived with and cared for him during his sickness. He left a brother and sister to mourn his passing, who are John McClure, Frisco agent at Purdy, and Mrs. Coll Arnold residing near the McClure home. Emmett McClure for several years had been in the employ of the Frisco Railroad, as supply man at stations where the agent wanted a lay off or they were short of help. He spent much time in attempting to restore his health, but it had obtained too great a hold on his system. We do not know whether he was a member of any church or not, but he was a believer in the Presbyterian Church. Rev. E.W. Love of Bethany Presbyterian Church of Joplin, conducted funeral services at his late home and the remains were conveyed to Rocky Comfort Cemetery Thursday where they were intered beside his wife. | Death Certificate Online Obit Phyllis Long Photo Bill Utter |
