Oct. 30, 1952 McDonald Co., MO |
Research Note: Son of Benjamin Monroe Hawkins and Mary Rice. His wife was Cora Hawkins. Mrs. Hardin Smith of Washburn, MO was the informant on the death certificate. - From the Laney family tree at ancestry.com: John was a farmer, a typesetter for the Seven Star newspaper. He also was a saw miller, worked for Frank Coffee. In the summertime he worked with a thrashing crew for Frank Coffee and John Camp. He helped thrash oats and wheat. John and Cora owned 80 acres in Star Hollow. The place was known as the old Bill Shipman place. They sold it and rented until they grew old then they bought a place in Rocky Comfort, just south of the cemetery and Baptist church house. They lived there until Cora passed away then John went to live with Eva and son-in-law Harlin Smith. John was a large built man and Cora was a small woman. She stayed at home, cooked, sewed for her large family, and did her washing on a washboard. With no conveniences like we have now, it was a 24 hour job. They laugh and say that when the twins were born that the midwife came out and told John one was born and another one was coming, he got excited and ran out and jumped on his horse and went to Rocky Comfort for the Doc. When they got back, Cora wouldn't let the Doc see her or let him come in her room. That was the only time she had a Doctor. They sold eggs for 11 cents a dozen, when they picked strawberries, they got 1 cent a quart. They could buy nice yard material for 5 cents a yard and in the grocery department they bought coffee 3 lbs. for 25 cents, and 10 lbs. of sugar for 29 cents. Those were the good old days but you didn't make much an hour either and work was a lot harder to do then. | Death Certificate Note Phyllis Long Photo Bill Utter |

HOLMES, Amos Isham, Dr. | Mar. 31, 1861 | Sept. 6, 1920 | Research Note: Son of James F. Holmes and Rebecca Kelly. - Wheaton Journal, Sept. 10, 1920 - Dr. I. A. HOLMES DIES SUDDENLY FROM A FALL - Fall of a few feet from spring house crushes skull and results in instantaneous death - Dr. Isham Holmes while standing on the wall of a spring house at his farm near Powell last Monday in some way lost his balance and fell backwards to the ground, striking the back of his head on a rock which crushed the skull and resulted in immediate death. Some neighbors with him at the time of the fall, hurried to his side but no signs of consciousness were shown after the fall. Dr. Holmes was born and reared in this community. As a boy he worked on his father's farm and attended the public school at Swindle College on Shoal Creek after which he taught in the public schools for two or three years. Then as a young man he went west, returning to this community after an absence of ten or twelve years and begun the study of medicine, graduating from the Barnes Medical College at St. Louis in 1898 after which he began the practice of his profession at Miami, Okla, where he was kept busy and won the confidence and respect of all with whom he came in contact. In 1914 he returned again to his old home and practiced medicine for two years with offices in Rocky Comfort. He then moved to Powell where he has bought a farm and continued the practice, developing the farm into a nice stock ranch. Three brothers, Stephen, Willie and Dr. J. K. Holmes and three sisters, Mrs. Walter Duncan, Mrs. Balmah Brown and Mrs. Sarah Holmes, all of this community survive him. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday by Rev. Red at the home of his sister Mrs. Balmah Brown and interment made in the Rocky Comfort Cemetery. Dr. Holmes was a man of rare attainments, possessing a positive character, standing for all that he believed to be right under all circumstances and denouncing those things which he believed to be wrong, regardless of the source from which they may have come. With his big loving, charitable heart ever pulsating in sympathy with the despondent, the afflicted and the distressed, he has gone fourth day after day and night after night giving out rays of sunlight to the despondent, relieving the pains of the afflicted and comforting the distressed. Though Dr. Holmes has gone on to that country from whose bourne no traveler has ever yet returned, he will live on and on in the memory of those who knew him best. | Online Obit Phyllis Long Photo Bill Utter |
