Burrows? of Purdy, MO was the informant on the death certificate. - Cassville Republican, December 23, 1915 - James Mitchell, Well Known Young Business Man of Fairview Dies - The people of Purdy and Fairview were deeply grieved Sunday night when the news came that James Mitchell had passed away at the Mt. Vernon Sanitarium, where he had been only a few days of treatment. For several years past until about one year ago James had been with the Forsythe and Goostree Grain Company at Fairview and was recognized as one of that town's enterprising young business men. He had won the implicit confidence of the public and had a bright business career before him. He had not only been industrious and attentive to business but had been saving of his earnings and at the time when forced to go West one year ago for this health, he had accumulated a neat little sum with which soon to engage in business on his own responsibility. Returning from the West he returned to business in October but soon realized that further treatment was necessary for the tubercular condition of the lungs so he went to the Mt. Vernon Sanitarium and had been there about ten days when death came. The immediate cause of which was weakness of the heart. James Mitchell was born at Berryville, Ark., in 1886, and was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Mitchell which have for a number of years lived at Purdy. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and a Shriner. James was an exceptionally fine young man in every regard and his untimely death was a severe shock to his family and host of close friends in both Barry and Newton Counties. His body was shipped to Purdy for burial. The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. It was one of the most largely attended funerals held in Purdy in recent years. The large crowd of friends from Barry and Newton Counties and the beautiful and magnificent floral tributes were strongest evidence of the high esteem in which James was held. A short but very impressive and appropriate funeral sermon was delivered by Rev. E. W. Love of this city, after which the beautiful Masonic funeral ceremony was used and the body laid to rest with the honors of that order in which the deceased had risen so rapidly. | Death Certificate Online Obit Phyllis Long Photo Jay Trace |

Morrow, and in order to commemorate the same, Mrs. Morrow planned a surprise dinner on the old folks. The surprise was complete but the dinner was the best part of all. Those present were Rev. Smith, Mr. and Mrs. Willis, Mrs. J. H. Lowery, Mrs. Morrow, Misses Effie Burris and Frona Morrow. - The Springdale News, Springdale, AR, August 31, 1906 - In last weeks News was a brief mention of the sudden death of Billy Morrow, the well known traveling man, at his home at Purdy, Missouri on Sunday evening, August 19. Later developments go to show that he committed suicide, due, doubtless, to the fact that he was behind several thousand dollars with the company by whom he was employed. For about twenty years Mr. Morrow has been traveling in this section in the interests of the McGregor-Noe Hardware Co. of Springfield, Missouri and was one of the best known traveling salesmen making this territory. His employers and the business public who had dealings with him had unlimited confidence in Mr. Morrow and all are slow to believe him guilty of any intentional dishonest acts. So far as we have been able to learn, Mr. Morrow was behind with his company about $10,000. Of this amount something over $7000 was for collections made from the firm of W. T. Farrar Co. at this place, Bentonville and Fayetteville and some $2000 was for collections made from the firm of Kimmons and Walker at Rogers. Arch McGregor, of the firm of McGregor-Noe's heaviest buyers and last November, Mr. Morrow told his company that this firm desired ten months time on their purchases in view of the fact that they were extending their business. The company, knowing the stability of Farrar and Co. very readily granted the request. It seems that while the company thought they were extending credit to Farrar and Co. Mr. Morrow was making his collections regularly and not turning the amounts in. It was not known what disposition Mr. Morrow made to the money thus collected but it is now thought that he spent it in giving rebates to his customers, all of whom supposed it was with the knowledge and consent of this company, but Mr. McGregor states that they knew nothing of such transaction. Mr. Morrow would sell a customer a bill of goods at a certain price and when he came around he would make the collection, paying the amount of the rebate out of his own pocket. It is supposed that this practice became so general that Mr. Morrow not only contributed largely of his own salary for rebates but that he also found it necessary to collect from one firm to pay up the indebtedness of another. As he always gave receipts when making collections the loss all falls on Mr. Morrow's company. As the ten months were up which Mr. Morrow represented, Farrar and Co. wanted Mr. McGregor wired him at his home at Purdy Sunday afternoon to meet him at Monett and together they would go to Rogers, settle with Kimmons and Walker, and then to Springdale and settle with Farrar and Co. It is stated that on the Sunday evening in question after he had gotten his family off to church, Mr. Morrow made a number of trips from his home to the depot and back again, as if undecided as to whether or not to go and meet his employer which meant exposure. It seems that his sensitive nature could not undergo the ordeal and the train left without him and going out to the buggy shed climbed into the buggy which had carried him on so many trips and took the morphine which quickly cut short the life of a noble, generous and kind-hearted man. The family, thinking he had gone to Monett knew nothing of Mr. Morrow's death until the body was found in the buggy next morning. Billy had taken his last trip and who can tell the anguish of his soul as he fought out that last fight with himself there on the Sabbath evening? If he has done wrong it was not for the purpose of self-gain and a just judge will judge him accordingly. It was learned that Mr. Morrow was behind with a Monett bank to the amount of $950, the Purdy bank $2500, Bank of Rogers $114.50 and R. E. Chewning, formerly of this place, $750. He destroyed all his books and papers before his death. W.I.I. Morrow was born in Savannah, Tennessee in November 1847 and located in Southwest Missouri in the early seventies, where he was married to a Miss Williams and to them were born three sons, all of whom, together with Mrs. Morrow, are dead. In 1901 he was united in marriage to Mrs. Burris. He was in the mercantile business at Corsicana, Barry County, for a number of years, later removed to Purdy, and later, in 1886, began traveling for McGregor-Noe Hardware Co., Mr. Morrow was a member of the Methodist church and took great interest in church and Sunday School work, always making it a point to be home every Sunday. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church at Purdy Tuesday, following his death, and the remains were interred in the Purdy cemetery. | Online Newspapers Obit Census Phyllis Long Photo Jay Trace |

SSW: Missouri A. - Research Note: Son of Alexander Moudy and Martha Willis. - Cassville Republican, Thursday, May 15, 1919 - Robert A. Moudy was born in Barry County, March 24, 1870 and quietly departed this life April 30, 1919, at his home near Corsicana. He was married to Miss Alice Lane who survives him. To this union two children were born, one son, Arlo, is living near Purdy. The other child having died in infancy. Besides his wife and son he leaves one grandson, father, mother, sisters, brothers, other relatives and a host of friends to mourn his passing. He was an excellent man and citizen and was held in highest esteem and loved by all of his acquaintances. Too much cannot be said of the life of Mr. Moudy, and especially the testimony of his last days for it showed the peace that comes in death of the life of a true and noble Christian, who has the weight of unsaved souls on his heart. He professed faith in Christ about twenty-five years ago and his life was a living testimony of his faith and trust in Christ. He was always ready to speak a word of warning and encouragement to the unsaved and encouraged Christians to be more faithful to their master and often spoke of the heavenly home he was going to and during his last days gave descriptions of his home in heaven and often said he was only waiting for Jesus to come to take him home.
