Frances Albert posted this obit: Funeral services for Claude James, 76, were held January 25, 1978 at the First Baptist Church of Shell Knob with Bro. Max Edmondson and Bro. Jess Higgs officiating. Burial was in the Painter Cemetery, under direction of Axley's Lakeside Mortuary of Shell Knob. Mr. James was a lifetime resident of Shell Knob. He was born the son of Nancy M. Epperly and Francis A. James, Jr. on January 28, 1901 in Shell Knob. The James family was one of the first families to settle in Shell Knob. Claude James was a fourth generation of a family originating from Virginia. The family moved from Virginia to Arkansas for a short time and then settled in the Shell Knob area. On April 3, 1929, Claude James and Zelma Blythe were united in marriage in Cassville, Missouri. To this union were born three daughters. Claude was a well known person in the Shell Knob area. He could ably bridge the olden days of the river and bottom country to the present lake area. Individuals returning to the area would always seek him out to find old landmarks of their past. He could recall for them stories and reminisce with them about their family histories. He was a jovial, fun living person. He had the ability to cheer you up no matter how down you were, just to be near him. He was a farmer all his life and especially enjoyed raising Hereford cattle on the farm on the lake where his ancestors originally lived. Left to mourn his passing are his three daughters, four grandchildren; one brother; and two sisters. He was preceded in death by his brother, Gilbert in 1929 and his wife Zelma, September 22, 1977. | Transcription Penny Cooper Bailey Obit Frances Albert Photo Jay Trace |

Research Note: Son of James W. and Marada (Sutton) James. His first wife was Elizabeth Painter. Second wife, Margaret Kepley. Francis filed for his CW pension on Nov. 6, 1889. - Cassville Republican, Aug. 5, 1915, Thursday - F. A. James - By W. J. Brock, neighbor and friend: Friday evening, July 30, about 7 o'clock, passed away one of our oldest and most respected citizens in the person of F. A. James. Had he lived to Jan 20, 1916, he would have been 80 years old. He was born in Izard County, Ark., in 1835 moving to Barry County in 1843, making him a citizen of this county for 72 years. His father, known as Jimmy James stopped about the mouth of Roaring River for a season, thence coming here where he lived ever after. He served three years and ten days in Co. H., 1st Ark. Cav. and was in the battle of Prairie Grove. He began paying taxes in this county when he was 16 years old and never missed a year nor never paid a nickel of taxes outside this county. He had been married twice, first to Miss Elizabeth Painter to which union there are three children living W. J. and J. W. James and Martha Applegate who get their mail at Shell Knob, and second to Mrs. Margaret (Kepley) Jarrett to which union one child survives, F. A. James, Jr. of this place. Back in the early 80's he served two years a judge of the eastern district of Barry County. His character was without a blemish, religiously morally or otherwise. He had been one of the main supports of the Christian Church here for years. He had a wonderful recollection of incidents that came under his observation such as name of persons and dates. He was one of the survivors who captured George Moore between the Horner Church and Cassville for the killing of Jack Carney and wife at Shell Knob some 47 years ago, the same party being hanged to the old bell post on the public square in Cassville without future ceremony. His remains were laid to rest in the Painter Cemetery by the side of his mother. The funeral service were conducted by Eld G. G. The children are: Claud, Troy, Mrs. Maudie Whisman and Mrs. Reena Stever, all of that section of the county. His son Gilbert passed away with pneumonia one week before his death. His wife preceded him in death about two or three years ago. He also leaves one brother, James also of Shell Knob. Funeral services were conducted at the Christian church at Shell Knob last Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Cottrell after which the remains were laid to rest in the Painter cemetery.
