Research Note: Orta Lee Ruggles Cameron-Comstock, age 91, of Shell Knob, Missouri, passed away Monday, March 18, 2013, in Meridan Village Retirement Center in Edwardsville, Illinois. She was the daughter of Joseph B. Ruggles and Cleda Elschlager Ruggles. On Mother's Day, 1943, she was united in marriage to Maurice Alan Cameron and to this union three children were born. Maurice preceded her in death in 1986. She later married the late Irving Comstock. Also preceding her in death were her son Rodrick Maurice Cameron, her parents, Joseph and Cleda Ruggles and her brothers and sisters, Harold, Garland, Jim, David, Joseph, Tyra, Ruth and Mary Lou. At 18 years of age Orta started teaching in a one-room schoolhouse in rural Illinois. Teaching soon became her passion as she enrolled into Western State College for Teachers, later changed to Western Illinois University. This would springboard a teaching career that spanned 49 additional years, the last sixteen at Shell Knob Community Grade School. She received a Masters Degree from Northern Illinois University in Special Education in 1967. Ten years of service took place while teaching reading to inner city teens, often taking an illiterate child to a middle school reading proficiency within a 9-month period. | Fohn Funeral Home Phyllis Long |

SSW: Mary E. - Research Note: Son of James Allen and Artie (Cordell) Carter, married Mary Ellen Nance, and she preceded him in death in August of 1988. Virgil R. Carter, 91, of Independence, formerly of Cassville, died December 5 in Medical Center of Independence. Mr. Carter was born August 3, 1909, near Viola, the son of James Allen and Artie (Cordell) Carter. He lived most of his life in Cassville, attending school at Roaring River School, in what is now Roaring River State Park. He was a member of the fire department and worked as a night watchman for Forest Products Inc. in Cassville. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Cassville. He married Mary Ellen Nance, and she preceded him in death in August of 1988. Survivors include one son, of Independence; one brother, Ellis Carter of Kansas City, Kansas; three sisters, Loraine Ball of Seligman, Mary Westphaling of Cassville, and Else Elding of Arlington, Virginia; two grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Merla Carter. Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, December 9, at Fohn Chapel in Cassville with Rev. Sid Allsbury officiating. Burial will be in Painter Cemetery in Shell Knob under the direction of Fohn Funeral Home of Cassville. She was Valedictorian of her 8th grade class and graduated from High School at Garden City, KS. She married Walter (Bud) Cavner on Feb. 26, 1941, at Lakin, KS. She met her "Buddy" when he was a short order cook and she was a waitress. She spent some weekends while Bud was in the service driving to Little Rock, AR to see him. Together they owned and operated Pepsi Cola Distributing Co. in Liberal, KS. Nellie was a bookkeeper and clerk for their business. They also traveled helping Bud's sister and her husband sell concessions for the Shrine Circus. They retired and moved to Knob Hill Acres in Shell Knob, MO in 1971. Nellie was a charter member and a very active member of First Christian Church of Shell Knob. Bud passed away in May of 1997. Preceding her in death were her parents; a stepson, Larry Cavner; 2 sisters, Myrtle Liedtke and Pearl Boaz and 2 brothers, Robert Pound and Ernest Pound. Inscription: "A US SOLDIER Co. 0 BTRY B, 342 2ND F.A." - Research Note: Son of John and Caroline (Cuthburt) Cooper. - Cassville Democrat, Cassville, Barry Co., MO, December 8, 1917 - Fred Cooper Dies in Camp: Barry County Boy is Victim of Pneumonia at Funston - Brought Back Friday - The telegraph wires brought the sad news of the death of Fred Cooper, a member of the U.S. Army, at Camp Funston, Kans., aged 27 years, Wednesday. The news of young Cooper's death was like an electric shock and spread about town like lightning for the young man was well and favorable known here where he had many friends. Another added into rest was because he was the first of the Barry County boys in the army to pass away. Fred Cooper was a son of John Cooper of Shell Knob, and was a very popular young man. He went to the army with the first contingent in the selective army, and left here September 19. News of his sickness was received by his parents Wednesday. Mr. Cooper, accompanied by his son, William, left here in a car hoping to catch a late train out of Monett. The remains were brought back Friday noon and taken to Shell Knob, for burial. Barry County mourns with the Cooper family. The Barry County boys at Camp Funston, through Sergeant Wm. A. Davidson, ordered a blanket of flowers to cover the casket of their comrade which was indeed a commendable act. Research Note: Son of George and Nancy (Hembry) Cooper. Donna's Note: Culver Funeral Home listed James L. Cooper with a Cassville address, stating that he had been in the community for 3 months. He was born in Barry County and his father was Wash Cooper, his mother Jane Hembree. He died Feb. 13, 1961 at the Cardwell Hospital in Newton Co., MO. He was a day laborer, single, born July 3, 1898. Charges were sent to Clarence Cooper, and the funeral orders were given by a brother and sister. Rev. Lawrence Henry of Seligman was the clergymen in charge of the service. He was buried in Painter Cemetery on Feb. 18, 1961 with Culver's in charge. It was changed to read correctly - per obit and death certificate. His death certificate reads that his father was Eli Cooper, born TN, and that his mother was Elinda Adcock, born TN. He was age 70 years, 4 mos. and 6 days old when he died. Eli Cooper, Shell Knob was the informant. - Cassville Republican, July 18, 1918 - John Cooper Dead - John S. Cooper of near Shell Knob, who for the past 40 years had been a citizen of Barry County, died in Cassville where he had been brought a few days ago for better medical attention, Sunday, July 14, of a kidney and bladder trouble. His body was prepared for burial by undertaker Horine and was taken to the Cooper home south of Shell Knob Sunday afternoon. The funeral services conducted by Rev. Will Ireland, were held Monday afternoon and internment made at the Painter Cemetery. John Cooper was born in White County, Tennessee, March 8, 1848. The Cooper family came to Wright County, this state, when John S. was a boy. Later the family lived in Howell, Oregon and Jasper counties. He was married and Howell County. Mrs. Cooper and eight children are living. A son, Fred, died last December at Camp Funston while in the military service. The children are: Mrs. Martha Painter, wife of Thos. Painter, Mrs. Paralee Mathews Mary Mills, wife of Noah Mills and Will, Arthur, Eli, Pleas and Charley. All of the children were present when their father passed away. All but Pleas live near Shell Knob. Pleas lives near Chelsea, Okla. He also leaves two brothers, Ben Cooper of Shell Knob and Wash Cooper northwest of Cassville and one sister, Mrs. Bettie Powell of Carrollton, Ark. All attended the funeral. Mr. Cooper came to Barry County about the year 1878 and located in the Horner locality southeast of Cassville. He lived for several years on what is now the I. W. Brock farm. For the past thirty years or more he had lived near Shell Knob. He was a conscientious, industrious, upright man. Cooper Who Left For Training Camp Succumbs to Spinal Meningitis - Wash Cooper northwest of Cassville received a telegram from the war department at Washington Saturday afternoon, bringing him the sad news of the death of his son, Private John S. Cooper, who was in the service of his country in Frances. The cause of death was given as spinal meningitis and the date July 13. John entrained at Cassville for Camp Funston on April 26, 1918 He landed at France June 16, 1918. His father received a card information him of his son's safe landing in due time after June 17. John was born near Mano and had lived all of his life in this county. He was 21 years old and single. About one year ago he was converted and united with the Baptist church at Antioch and lived the kind of life he had professed. His family has the sympathy of the people of the county in their bereavement. Fred Cooper, a cousin of John's who died in December at Camp Funston was the first Barry county soldier boy to die while away in his county's service and John Cooper is the first death reported of one of the Barry county boys in the service overseas. The memory of these noble young men will ever be cherished as the first Barry county's heroes who made the supreme sacrifice in obedience to the call of their county. Memorial services in his honor are to be conducted at the Antioch church, Sunday afternoon, July 28, at 3 o'clock. - Cassville Democrat, Sept. 11, 1920 - Friday, Sept. 3, 1920, the remains of Soldier John S. Cooper who died in a U. S. Hospital in England, June 30, 1918, of meningitis, arrived in this city, accompanied by Staff Sergeant David C. Wilks of Camp Pike, Ark., who delivered the remains to Wash Cooper of Shell Knob, taking his receipt. The remains were conveyed to the Baptist Church, where funeral services were conducted by Rev. Edward Chappell after which the remains were conveyed to a cemetery near Shell Knob, where they were interred. John S. Cooper was a member of Antioch Baptist Church and that church on receiving news of his death, held appropriate funeral service to his memory. The most beautiful flag on earth covered the coffin and was presented to the father by Staff Sergeant Wilks as his. Many relatives and friends were at the C. and W. depot to meet the remains. Cunningham, 65, of Shell Knob, died April 17 at South Barry County Hospital in Cassville. Mr. Cunningham was born September 2, 1935, in Tifton, Georgia, the son of Ian Maclaren and Viola Luverne (Hirsch) Cunningham. He graduated from Bowling Green State University and the University of Wisconsin. He was employed as a mycologist in Springdale, Arkansas. He was an Army veteran. He was a professor at Northwestern Bible College and Maranatha Baptist College. He was a member of the Gideons International, Men of Science, and American Phyto Pathological Society. He married Donna McCormick on August 31, 1958. Additional survivors include two daughters, of Eagle Rock, and of Shell Knob; two brothers, of McArthur, Ohio, and of Sardina, Ohio; one sister, of Charlotte, South Carolina; and 10 grandchildren. Graveside services were 2 p.m. today, April 20, at Painter Cemetery in Shell Knob with Rev.
