On December 19, 1964, in Macedonia, he was united in marriage to Audrey Riddle. Gerald grew up in Southwest Missouri. Prior to entering the United States Army he lived in Crane, Missouri. He worked in Kansas City for a time for King Louie Garment Factory. He then resided in Monett, Missouri before moving to Branson in 1989. He was employed with Jay-Zee Garment Factory in Pierce City, Monett and Branson for over thirty years as a sewing machine mechanic. For ten years, Gerald was a Scout Master. Payne who is at the bedside of a sick brother in Virginia writes Mrs. Payne that his brother is improving. - Cassville Republican, Thursday, Oct. 3, 1918 - Oak Ridge: Mr. and Mrs. T. A. Payne went to Kansas Friday to see their son, Clay, who is there in an auto school before he went overseas. They found him quarantined on account of the Spanish Influenza and could only talk to him across the street. Too bad for a mother to go so far and could not even shake hands with her boy. - Cassville Republican, Thursday, Dec. 26, 1918 - First Barry County Boys Return from Over-seas: Ernest Payne and Clarence McKinney returned the first of the week from over-seas. Ernest from the battle front and Clarence from England. Payne was in the sector which did such heroic work near Metz, in Lorraine. He was wounded in the right hand. The wound has healed so that he now has the use of the hand. McKinney was in the navy aviation corps. Payne has many interesting things to tell of the work of General Perishing's army on the front. He having been the first of the boys in the thick of the fighting to return to Cassville, he has numerous inquirers? about the part of the home boys in the world war. Young Payne is a son of Mr. and Mrs. T. A. Payne of the Oak Ridge locality northeast of Cassville. Survivors include her special friend, Larry Cornman of Aurora, Missouri; one son of Monett; three daughters, both of Monett, and one of Aurora; two brothers, Arthur Reed of Cassville and Jesse Reed of Athens, Georgia; two sisters, Rose Ingle of Monett and Earlene Cragg of Stillwell, Oklahoma; 12 grandchildren and one great grandchild. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Johnny Reed and Gene Reed; and one sister, Helen Vanderpool.
