Research Note: Son of Lavern Madison and Marlene (Scott) Earle. He had two sisters, Shelley and Carissa, and four brothers, Scott, Ken, Kerry and Terry. He had son Brandon, Daughter Wendi, stepdaughter Danielle, step-grandson Elijah. - SHERIFF: COUPLE'S QUARREL ENDS IN FATAL SHOOTING - Rural Exeter woman accused of shooting man in forehead: EXETER, Mo.-She called him up, wanting him to get his deer meat out of her freezer. He drove over to her place. She took the meat out to him. They began to argue. He hit her a couple of times. She went back in her house and reemerged with a revolver. She yelled for him to leave and fired a warning shot. He didn't leave. He started toward her. She started toward him. She raised the gun, pulled the trigger and shot him in the forehead. That's the basic account that the Barry County Sheriff said investigators had been able to put together by Monday concerning the fatal shooting Sunday afternoon of Kevin L. Madison, 45, outside the home of Adella Fae Patton, 44, about 2 1/2 miles north of Exeter. Madison, who also lives in the Exeter area, was pronounced dead at the scene of the shooting in the yard of Patton's home down a dirt lane off Route CC. Patton called the shooting in herself at 2:27 p.m., the sheriff said. She told a dispatcher that there had been an argument and Madison had been shot. "When deputies pulled up on the scene, they saw a male subject lying on the ground with a female subject holding a cloth to his head," the Sheriff said. He declined to discuss what Patton told the deputies when they arrived. But he said it soon was determined that Madison had been shot once in the forehead. Efforts by emergency medical personnel to save him provided futile, he said. The sheriff said a .22-caliber revolver was found inside the house and seized as evidence. He said Patton was arrested a short time later. "We have probable cause to believe that she committed the crime of second-degree murder," the sheriff said Monday afternoon. "We're also seeking a charge of armed criminal action." Both charged were filed Monday by the local prosecutor, and Patton made an initial appearance in Barry County Circuit Court. She remained in custody Monday night in Barry County Jail, with her bond set at $250,000. An autopsy on Madison was conducted Monday in Springfield, the sheriff said. The sheriff described Madison and Patton as an on-again, off-again couple who had lived together in the past but were not living together at the time of the shooting. Epperly said investigators have reason to believe it was something of a stormy relationship, with sheriff's deputies having been called on previous occasions to settle disturbances between the two. He said Madison had been charged with domestic assault in the past. "We believe that he had hit her a few times out there in the driveway, and that she had gone back into the house and come out with a weapon." He said investigators also believe that Patton fired a warning shot in an effort to get Madison to leave, but he refused. The sheriff said evidence suggests that the fatal shot was fired at relatively close range. The sheriff said another man was in Patton's house at the time of the shooting. But that man has told investigators that he did not see what happened in the yard. | Obituary Note Carissa McCracken Photo Darla Marbut |
